- Inhalt
- Theories on aesthetics were current in the Islamic middle ages. Were they only applied to poetry, or did they pertain to art, too? The important part that non-figural motifs played in Islamic art suggests that the role of ornament requires particular attention in this context. The perception of Islamic art by art historians from the 19th century onwards has led to new theories on Muslim aesthetics. To what degree are these connected with medieval Arabic positions, and how far were they informed by colonialist and essentialist views? Is there an ‘objective’ way to find out about the aesthetics of Islamic art, e. g. through a study of proportions? These and other questions are raised and discussed in pieces of literature that are to be studied in class. The reading is meant not only to introduce some important texts, but also to widen the view for theoretical approaches.
