Inhalt
For a long time, Western art historians have assumed that the concept of modernism in its fullest authenticity took place exclusively in Western Europe and North America, and that its principles and instruments were merely adapted and imitated in non-Western regions. As a result, modern art from this region was given a subordinate status and was often considered an insignificant and belated practice of the Western avant-garde, without placing it in the context of complex developments of cultural hybridity. Based on current research projects ("Other Modernities": Patrimony and Practices of Visual Expression Outside the West, SNF) and publications that counteract these narratives, this course will address the question of how 20th century art works from the MENA region are located within art history. Do we need to consider them in a trans-regional context or as a continuation of "Islamic art"? What materials are available and what is the current state of research? This course provides an overview of the emergence and development of Modern Art in Arab countries with examples from Lebanon, Egypt, and Iraq. The artworks will be analysed from historical and political perspectives and their genesis will be examined in the context of local intellectual discourses.
