Inhalt
Light is not just important for any designed space, it also has a crucial function in the Islamic architecture due to the unique meaning of light in Islam. Koranic and poetry literature presents a profusion of references to light, lamp, clarity and illumination, starting with the famous Verse of Light. The seminar will address the question of both natural and artificial light in the architecture in the Islamic World. It will look at design strategies as well as artificial lighting methods developed in order to stage light in religious buildings, such as architectural forms, mashrabiya and stained glass. Material culture informs us about lighting objects and traditions from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean, studying lamps and other lighting devices is thus informative about lighting strategies. Finally, light has also been a subject of representation, and we will in particular discuss lamp representations in mihrabs and illumination representation in paintings.
