Inhalt

This lecture presents classic topics in English linguistics and discusses their relevance for the Bavarian Staatsexamen (with a focus on LA Gymnasium). Topics and studies to be dealt with include the following (relevant synchronic State Exam sections are given in brackets):

Variability in rhoticity (e.g. Labov’s classic sociolinguistic department store study), both from a transatlantic perspective and in terms of variation on either side of the Atlantic Ocean, thus contrasting RP and General/Standard American pronunciation with African American English, New York English; English in England, Scotland and Ireland (A1, B1),
First- and Second-Language Acquisition (B2),
German learner English, with a focus on the dental fricatives represented orthographically by <th> (A1, B2),
The Great Vowel Shift (B1, also relevant for the diachronic State Exam for LA Gymnasium),
Pragmatics, with a focus on Prototype Theory and Grice’s Cooperative Principle (B4),

Finally, a combination of all of the above plus Morphology & Lexicon (A4), Text & Style Analysis (A3) and Syntax (A2) will be offered by investigating teaching applications of music videos like Michael Jackson’s Black or White from 1991, which can be interpreted as an early contribution to diversity studies, inter alia.
