MA General Linguistics: The seminar can be imported as module for the elective area: Master Module English Linguistics (10 ECTS, with lecture), Profile Module English Linguistics I (10 ECTS, with lecture) or Profile Module English Linguistcs III (8 ECTS).

- Description:
The English language as it was spoken (and written) in the Middle Ages, that is, roughly in the centuries before the year 1500, is much different to Present-day English. This is particularly true of Old English, which is the term we use for English spoken in the period before the Norman Conquest of 1066. The forms of English spoken in the Middle English period are more akin to Present-day English and are much easier to understand for today's speakers. In recent times we observe a fascination with medieval culture and authentic medieval languages in popular culture, which particularly focuses on Old English (books, movies, TV-series -- think of Tolkien and Vikings!). This class is intended to give students a guided tour to Old and Middle English as it is transmitted in authentic sources, but we will also discuss recent popular adaptations and made-up dialogues. We will explore the structure of these language stages before the backdrop of historical and cultural developments. Together we will discover similarities and differences between Old and Middle English on the one side and Present-day English (and also German) on the other, regarding sounds, words, grammar and meaning. Thus, for all those with exploratory spirit and interest in the earliest stages of the English language this class will prepare the ground that they may venture on their own paths of discovery. Master students and all those wishing to obtain 8 ECTS-credits in this class are asked to contribute additional scholarly depth on the Old and Middle English language systems and issues of language change through their contibutions, in particular their oral presentations.
Knowledge of earlier stages of the English language is no requirement for participation in this course -- everyone is welcome!
