- This course will be held in English.
- BA students may use this course as an 8-ECTS seminar for Aufbaumodul 2, Erweitertes Aufbaumodul 2, and the Vertiefungsmodul, or as a 2-ECTS lecture for Erweitertes Aufbaumodul 2 and the Vertiefungsmodul.
- Prior completion of an introductory course to linguistics (e.g. An Introduction to Linguistics or an equivalent course from other programmes) is expected.
- Successful completion of this course requires a passing grade in multiple written assignments.
- This course commences in the second week of the semester (26 April)!
Registration for course participation via FlexNow! is possible from 1 April until 30 April 2023.

- Inhalt
- Ainu is a moribund language spoken by the indigenous people of the island of Hokkaidō in northern Japan. Though strongly influenced by contact with Japanese and other Japonic languages, Ainu and its sibling languages are not related to them and considered language isolates.
This course explores the grammatical structure of Ainu and its differences to familiar European languages. It also discusses the history of its status as a marginalized minority language within Japan, and what it means for a language and culture to die out.
No prior knowledge of Ainu or Japanese is necessary. All students need to bring to the course are a solid grasp of the fundamentals of linguistic theory (phonology, morphology, syntax), an open mind, and a penchant for problem-solving.
