- Inhalt
- The course introduces students to Tabasaran, a language of the Lezgic branch of the East Caucasian (Nakh-Daghestanian) family. Originally, it is the language of everyday communication of the indigenous people living in traditional villages on the northeastern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. With about 100,000 native speakers, Tabasaran is divided into a number of dialects. The course discusses the core linguistic properties of Tabasaran. It provides an overview of the Tabasaran phonological system, which is rich with consonants unknown in European languages (dento-labial, glottal, ejective and others). We will also discuss the morphological profile of nominal inflection, focusing on the elaborated case system, and of verbs, especially the tense-aspect system. Finally, we will turn to the discussion of the key syntactic features in the language: ergativity, gender-number agreement, and person clitics. During the course, students will listen to audio recordings of the language and try to carry out linguistic analysis of short texts in Tabasaran.
