Inhalt
This course begins with some fundamental questions regarding the respective roles of quantitative versus qualitative methdologies in the social sciences, and considers recent attempts to apply quantitative methodologies in the social sciences. We then move on to look at some more practical applications of quantitative methodologies in linguistics. We will then consider some concrete examples of applying quantitative methodologies in linguistics, considering methods of data collection (observation, experimental settings, surveys and questionnaires). In the latter part of the course we introduce the basics of quantitative analysis in the form of descriptive statistics (absolute versus relative values; measures of dispersion, mean, median, mode, testing for significance). Students will also have the opportunity to conduct their own investigation and apply the knowledge acquired in the course.
