Gaststudierendenverzeichnis, Studium Generale, Erweiterungsbereich, Seminar für das Aufbaumodul bzw. das Erweiterte Aufbaumodul 1 "Sprache und Gesellschaft" sowie das Vertiefungsmodul im BA-NF "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" und das Mastermodul 3 "Sprachliche Diversität" im MA "General Linguistics". Die Veranstaltung kann auch als Vorlesung für das Profilmodul sowie das Vertiefungsmodul im BA-NF "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" besucht werden.
Zeit: Di 8:15 - 9:45; Bemerkung zu Zeit und Ort: Die Veranstaltung findet online statt.

- im Aufbaumodul 1 (6 ECTS) gilt eine Portfolio-Prüfung bzw. eine Hausarbeit mit einem Mindestumfang von 10 Seiten als Leistungsnachweis
- im Erweiterten Aufbaumodul 1 (8 ECTS) gilt eine Portfolio-Prüfung bzw. eine Hausarbeit mit einem Mindestumfang von 14 Seiten als Leistungsnachweis
- im Vertiefungsmodul (8 ECTS) gilt eine Portfolio-Prüfung bzw. eine Hausarbeit mit einem Mindestumfang von 14 Seiten als Leistungsnachweis
- im Profilmodul (2 ECTS) gilt eine Hausarbeit mit einem Mindestumfang von 6 Seiten als Leistungsnachweis
- im Mastermodul 3 gilt ebenfalls eine Portfolio-Prüfung bzw. eine benotete schriftliche Hausarbeit (Umfang nach Absprache) als Leistungsnachweis
- Inhalt
- This course deals with the relationship between language and culture. We will start out by examining different aspects of language that are particularly tightly connected to cultural considerations, for instance rules of verbal interaction (“ethnography of speaking”), kin systems and conceptual structures of the natural world (body parts, taxonomies of living beings), and their reflections in linguistic structures. We will later turn to more theoretical questions concerning, for instance the extent to which linguistic and cultural practices may influence the way we see the world (Sapir-Whorf), the nature of the relation between language and culture, levels of representational categories and issues pertaining to methodologically sound comparison of languages and cultures.
The goal of the course is to familiarise students with theoretical concepts pertaining to anthropological linguistics and the basic toolkit for their empirical study. Given that both language and culture comprise sets of knowledge that is mostly tacit, a central goal of the course is to train ourselves to reflect upon the languages and cultures we are familiar with and make our knowledge explicit in a clear manner.
Basic reading and more detailed information on the structure and content of the course will be made available closer to the start date of the teaching period.
