Inhalt
Language is the primary means of communication between human beings, and thus an integral aspect of our ability to act collectively, and to create human societies. Language is not just a means of exchanging information; it is also a way of expressing or evoking emotions, attracting attention, marking boundaries, or establishing connections and solidarity. In this course we introduce the main concepts of sociolinguistics, a sub-discipline of linguistics at the intersection with sociology, anthropology, and social psychology. The main source is Meyerhoff (2011), but other material will also be made available via the VC. Topics to be covered include: Variation: regional, social class, gender, age Methods for conducting sociolinguistic research: defining linguistic variables; data collection and analysis Language attitudes Multilingualism and language choices
