- Inhalt
- Investigating variation in language use Sociolinguistics is concerned with the ways that language usage varies according to social factors: speakers' age and background, the setting in which language is used, levels of formality etc. are among the many factors that can influence the way people use language. In this course we introduce the background to sociolinguistics as a branch of linguistics, and discuss the most important social factors (or variables) that are known to impact on language. We then move on to look at different methodologies in sociolinguistics, including participant observation, questionnaires, and interviews, and discuss issues of data collection and analysis.
We will follow the outline of Meyerhoff (2011), but other literature will be introduced during the course. Participants are expected to contribute towards an investigation of their own design, which will be the basis for a term paper.
