Seminar für das Aufbaumodul 1 sowie das Vertiefungsmodul im BA-NF "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft". Die Veranstaltung kann auch als Vorlesung für das Profilmodul im BA-NF "Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft" besucht werden.

Inhalt
One of the central characteristics of human language and individual languages is diversity: a wealth of diverse phonological, grammatical and lexical/semantic structures can be observed across languages, and across communities and cultures. A more basic dimension of language diversity is the variable design of language within a specific community, that is how different speakers from different social groups differ in their use and representation of linguistic structures. Social factors correlating with language diversity in Western and other economically developed societies are regional background, age, gender, socioeconomic status, education and occupation, and we will focus on these for the purposes of this course. However, we will also touch upon more recent work on smaller-scale communities where other social dimensions are often relevant, for instance clan, moiety or “skin” membership in societies of Papuanesia and Australia. We will also deal with choices of language in multilingual communities and minority languages, including Western societies, and the basic dimensions of language contact.

Students will be expected to complete regular assignments and to devise their individual small research projects on a topic of individual choice. References and sources will be made available through the VC page of this course closer to the beginning of the semester.
