Inhalt
This course provides an overview into the main issues surrounding the concepts of pidgin and creoles. Broadly speaking, we need to consider both the particular sociocultural conditions that lead to the emergence of these two phenomena, and the kinds of linguistic forms (phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon etc.) which characterize them.

Empfohlene Literatur
This topic is closely interrelated with other topics, in particular language change, language contact, and language acquisition, and there is a vast literature on it (see the end of this document for a selection). We will primarily use Velupillai (2015), and make reference to the online accessible Atlas of Pidgin and Creole Structures Online (Michaelis et al 2013):
• Michaelis, Susanne Maria & Maurer, Philippe & Haspelmath, Martin & Huber, Magnus (eds.) 2013. Atlas of Pidgin and Creole Language Structures Online. Leipzig: Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. (Available online at http://apics-online.info, Accessed on 2021-04-09.) • Velupillai, Viveka. 2015. Pidgins, creoles and mixed languages. An introduction. Amsterdam: Benjamins.
