Inhalt
This course will explore recent cutting-edge research in the study of Islam and Judaism in the modern Middle East emerging from various disciplines (sociology, anthropology, history, political science, critical legal studies, gender studies and philosophy). Students will learn the various methodologies and theories necessary for critical engagement and cogent scholarship involving the various dimensions of religious phenomenon emerging out of the region. It will pair together two bodies of literature. 1) Theoretical sources relevant to the various social scientific and philosophic lenses applied to the study of religion’s relationship with politics, law, and gender. 2) Scholarship on modern Islam and Judaism that actively implement such approaches. In this fashion, students will become empowered to write successful B.A. and M.A. theses. The studies drawn upon will mostly come from scholarship on contemporary Israeli-Judaism and Iranian-Shiism, thereby allowing for some thematic unity despite the disciplinary breadth introduced. Two-three sessions will nevertheless be devoted to sources relevant to the paper topics of enrolled students. Students are asked to read Galley, Susanne’s Das Judentum and Halm, Heinz’s Der schiitische Islam before the start of the course.

Language of Instruction: English. German sources will potentially be used depending on student enrollment. Students may write their final papers in either English or German.

Course Expectations: This course is offered through the Elite M.A. program Cultural Studies of the Middle East (CSME). Course expectations are therefore fashioned according to the standards of its modules.

Approximately 100 pages total of English/German reading per week. Students must commit to doing the reading, or else the course will not succeed.
One 20-30 min class presentation (Referat)
Final paper of ~15 pages that can also be a mature proposal for an M.A./B.A. Thesis
