- The cardfile as a tool for the organization of knowledge has died at some point in the second half of the 20th century. In its place stepped first the Personal Computer, then “the Internet”. Unsurprisingly, if somewhat paradoxically, the organization of data for individual research projects has at the same time become both easier, and more demanding and complex. Surprisingly there is comparatively little coverage of the topic in today’s university instruction in the humanities. While formerly tutorials on how to organize one’s data in paper cardfile boxes were in abundant supply (and contained in many books covering “introduction to scientific work”) I find really helpful information to be much less accessible today. There is, of course, commercial software with students’ licenses that universities offer. While comparatively convenient to use, in the longer perspective these solutions come at the price of a vendor lock-in, making its users dependent on their commercial software supplier. This class is intended to discuss the problem and existing free software for the purpose of collecting and organizing data for qualitative research in humanities. It is based on my personal experience and requirements in the fields of Ottoman and Turkish studies but should be of potential interest to a much broader audience within the Humanities. Some sessions will be on MS-Teams or Zoom.
