- Researchers writing on late Ottoman history frequently are confronted with a predicament. On the one hand they are expected to theorize their approaches and strategic terminology used in their research according to the state of art in the humanities. On the other hand they are frequently confronted with a lack of seemingly simple empirical factual data (e.g. on people, places, dates and events) which, among historians, would be regarded as their duty to provide. As both types of tasks not only require considerable investment in terms of time and energy but also point to different directions rarely involving synergistic effects there can be no general solution or “best practice” for solving them. All that can be done is to decide and discuss on a case-to-case basis which workaround would seem most appropriate in a given situation.
