Social Desirability (Theorien und Modelle der Diagnostik)

Dozent/in
Dr. rer. nat. Thomas Lösch

Angaben
Seminar
Pflichtmodul Vertiefung Diagnostik, Theorien und Modelle
Zeit und Ort: Di 16:00 - 18:00, M3/01.16

Inhalt
Social desirability (or social desirable responding) can be referred to as a systematic bias to answer self-reports in a way that presents oneself in an overly positive light. Due to social desirability, individuals may not report their “true” standing on a trait, and thus, social desirability may pose a serious threat to the validity of questionnaires.

In this seminar on social desirability, we will aim at understanding social desirability and how it is related to validity. In the end, the seminar should qualify participants to judge how social desirability might be relevant in their own applied or research projects and whether and how they should employ measures to control for social desirability. To achieve this goal, we will focus on three topics. First, we will contrast and compare social desirability with related terms including self-enhancement, faking, or response styles to get a deeper understanding of the specific meanings of these terms. Second, we will focus in on the concept of validity and assess how strong social desirability affects validity in diverse contexts (e.g., clinical diagnosis, personnel selection). Third, we will consider measures to reduce the effect of social desirability or control for it.

The seminar will be based on a selection of texts including overview articles as well as theoretical, methodological, and empirical papers. Participants will prepare the respective text in advance to discuss them during the sessions.

The seminar will be held in English to give participants the opportunity to get used to and improve in English as primary language for professional communication in the safe context of a seminar.

Formal requirement for the completion of the course is to keep the provided learning diary. In the learning diary, questions regarding the weekly texts are posed. The completed learning diary needs to be handed in at least for 6 of 9 texts.
