- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
- Prerequisites: BA in political science or a comparative qualification (for students with foreign degrees); Basic knowledge of research methods and experience in structuring and writing academic papers. Teaching language is English so sufficiently good English is required.
Erwerb eines Leistungsnachweises/Assessment: Portfolio consisting of a presentation (10%), project proposal (15%) and term paper (75%).

- Inhalt
- A vast number of theories in political science involve the notion of “political preferences” of voters, candidates, parties, legislators, judges, or other actors. A prime example is the spatial model of politics, in which actors have “policy positions” based on which they make decisions. Empirically testing such theories poses major measurement problems: What data and information can we use to infer political preferences? How can we accurately and reliability measure the preferences of political actors from such data? And how can we compare estimated preferences across time and space? This seminar focuses on the measurement of political party preferences. We we will explore some of the key developments in the field, including the use of expert surveys, the coding of party manifestos, the analysis of roll-call data, and the automated text analysis of manifestos and speeches. We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various methods and what they tell us about modern political competition.
