Inhalt
In a more and more globalized world, questions of justice arise with regard to global economic inequality, poverty, refugees, global warming and the like. Many theorists argue that justice or moral duties of assisting the poor do not stop at country borders but apply equally to all human beings (cosmopolitan positions). Others argue that there are special duties with regard to our fellow countrymen and that democratic self-determination implies a right of single states to refrain from giving equal consideration of justice to all human beings. In the seminar, we will discuss these basic normative-theoretical issues alongside more practical questions, for example: How should liberal democracies treat refugees and do rich countries have a moral duty to do more for them? How should migration be regulated, for example, is there a right to free movement across borders? Should we redistribute more resources to the global poor? How would a just global order look like (for example, with regard to issues of intellectual property rights and access to live-saving pharmaceuticals in poor countries)? How can we justly deal with the effects of global warming? Under what conditions can war be justified (for example: preemptive/preventive war, drone strikes, etc.)?
