Essay in an open-book exam setting (14/08/2024, 14:00–17:00, RZ/00.05; 100% of final grade); ungraded group presentation in the last session (17/07); supplementary ungraded assignments. Further details will be provided in the first session.

- It’s estimated there are several thousand people living on our planet right now who have, to the best of our knowledge, no clue whatsoever that there are such things as states, cars, hospitals, sewers, elecriticity, or more than a few dozen human beings. That is because they live in small indigenous communities in remote, isolated territories and have never had ‘contact’ with the outside world. Should we establish contact with these people? Or should we, as existing policies firmly hold, leave them alone and even actively shield them from accidental encounters with strangers? The problem of ‘establishing contact’ is, as it turns out, not the sole preserve of science fiction authors imagining adventures in space travel – it is one we face in the actual world.
What’s more, this seemingly obscure problem raises a host of practically challenging and theoretically fascinating questions because it eludes or casts doubt on the avenues we might first try to pursue in tackling it: There is, for instance, no recourse to the preferences of those affected when asking them would defy the very point you meant to ask them about. When we, therefore, have to decide on others’ behalf, we often refer to what would be in their best interest. But how confident can we be in judging that being contacted would be good for them?
In this course, we will dip into a range of established theoretical debates and explore how ideas and arguments from these debates may or may not allow us to better understand the problem of uncontacted peoples. For instance, we will discuss such questions as: Do theories of global justice imply that we have duties of aid vis-à-vis them? How ought we to take decisions on other people’s behalf? What makes human lives go better or worse? How do cultural practices and life plans we come to endorse matter morally? And could we ever rationally decide to change who we are?
