Inhalt
At the heart of every democracy is the principle of political equality (“one person, one vote”). Although citizens – despite differences in education, income and wealth – are formally granted the same number of votes, a growing literature shows that their voices are not considered equally in politics. In fact, there are empirical studies showing that there exists a participation gap: Citizens with higher educational attainment and more economic resources are considerably more politically active (e.g. in elections, other forms of participation as well as representatives) than the ones having less. Moreover, since the late 1980s the trend of growing social and economic inequality in advanced democracies has been observed. How do these trends affect liberal democracies? Is democracy capable of reducing economic inequality? If so, why has it failed to stop the rise of inequality? In this seminar, we will discuss the most important implications of political inequality in democracies looking at empirical studies. These studies use a host of different methods, analyse trends over time or across countries (statistical knowledge will prove to be useful here). We will mostly focus on Western democracies but in some cases also look at other less established democracies. At the end, students should be enabled to critically assess studies on political inequality and write a term paper related to that topic with a self-selected research question.
