- Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
- There are four course requirements, each of which will be marked separately and count for the percentage value indicated.
15% Active participation in class discussions and reading sheets for all core texts. 20% One presentation (10 min) on an optional reading for one of the substantial topics. 15% One presentation (5 min) on a text from the section researching ethnicity . 50% A research paper or research design (4,000-5,000 words/ 10-15 pages) exploring how ethnicity caused a political outcome, or how ethnic classifications and/or self-identifications changed as the result of a political process.

- Inhalt
- This course is about ethnicity and its role in politics. We will ask and answer questions such as: What is ethnicity? Are ethnicities biological realities or socially constructed? How does ethnicity matter for politics? How is democracy shaped by the ethnic composition of a country, and what are ethnic alliances and ethnic entrepreneurs? What is ethnic violence and ethnic war, and why do people fight along ethnic lines? And can ethnic division lines be accommodated by institutional design, or overcome entirely?
Apart from addressing these substantial questions, we will explore how ethnicity and its impact on politics can be studied empirically. How can we measure ethnicity, and what type of designs can we use to establish that ethnicity caused a political outcome? And can politics alter the way ethnicities are perceived?
