- In the last decades, the number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) has proliferated. NGOs are often praised as central actors in the fight against poverty and for human rights and democracy. They are typical recipients of foreign aid in fragile states, authoritarian regimes and in situations of political transformation. But do NGOs live up to all expectations? Are they part of civil society or rather unrooted elite organizations? How effective are they and how can we measure their performance? How independent are they from governments?
This seminar explores the phenomenon of NGOs from different angles. Its aim is to introduce students to theoretical concepts and methodological approaches in the analysis of NGOs. The seminar will be held in English. Participants are expected to read the assigned papers in advance of each session.
