Inhalt
What are political parties and their functions? How do they come around and persist? How do they compete against each other? These are some of the questions this course addresses by juxtaposing Eastern Europe to Western Europe and exploring potential differences in party competition. The course is composed of three main parts. In Part I, we will cover general issues such as origin of parties, their functions, and behavior. Particular attention will be devoted to the cleavage theory and its application in post-communist Eastern Europe. Part II will then investigate what parties offer their voters depending on the competition strategy they choose. During three weeks, we will discuss how parties differ in their attempt to form linkages with voters and how these attempts may vary between Eastern and Western Europe. Finally, in the concluding Part III of the course, we will turn to the non-societal factors that influence party competition, such as electoral institutions and European integration, as well as issues related to campaigning and convincing voters, such as party manifestos, positive and negative messaging, and patterns of voting behaviour. Overall, the course will give participants an understanding of how the nature of party competition differs between Eastern and Western Europe.
