- Covering questions such as why is it important immigrants to participate the politics in the country of residence? What does it take for immigrants to be politically active? How do immigrants incorporate in the politics of the country of residence? this course will provide the students with knowledge about immigrants’ political behaviour and the way they engage in politics. Students will engage with literature from political science, migration studies and political psychology on the ongoing debates about immigrants’ political engagement. The course will enable students to develop critical thinking of the contemporary theories for immigrants’ political participation and incorporation. At the end of the course, students will develop an understanding of the various aspects that influence the political behaviour of immigrants and will be able to discuss the political participation of immigrants from diverse perspectives.
The course will be organized in weekly seminars which will be divided into two parts. In the first part of the seminar, the instructor will provide a brief overview of the weekly topic and address the key questions in the literature on the topic discussed. In the second part of the seminar, students will be asked to engage in a critical discussion on the weekly topic using arguments from the reading list and broader literature.
In addition to regular participation and collaboration, each student is expected to submit one essay and to hold one group presentation. Students are expected to choose a topic for the essay and for the presentation that is covered in the syllabus. The essay will hold 90% of the total grade while the presentation 10 % of the total grade.

Essays are evaluated in terms of two main criteria: (1) quality of the arguments based on the cited literature; and (2) structure, coherence, and style of the essay. Quality of argument carries 75% weight and structure, coherence, and style carries 25% weight in the essay grade. The evaluation of the essay will be based on how successfully the author used and interpreted theoretical ideas from the literature, how innovative are the arguments discussed in the essay, as well as how successfully are supported the arguments with relevant literature. In terms of structure, coherence, and style, students are expected to have well developed organization of their ideas, to present clearly and systematically their argumentation and use formal writing with adequate referencing.
The presentation will be evaluated in terms of three main criteria: (1) delivered presentation (clarity of arguments, structure, style); (2) content (literature used, arguments developed, empirical support); (3) teamwork, each student must contribute the presentation and be actively involved in the preparations for the presentation. The quality of the delivered presentation will weigh 25%, the content of the presentation 50% and teamwork will weigh 25% of the overall presentation grade.
