- Inhalt
- Much of the theoretical and empirical sociological research on social mobility is concerned with descriptions and explanations for social reproduction, i.e. the association between social origins and social destinations. In this seminar, we specifically seek for explanations for upward social mobility. Upward social mobility describes situations when, for example, children surpass their parents’ educational attainment or social status. As a starting point of the course, we will review all major theoretical accounts that provide explanations for social reproduction before we approach the issue of upward social mobility more specifically and in all its theoretical facets. The course is designed as a project seminar, which means that – based on rigour sociological reasoning – we will develop own ideas why some individuals manage to be upwardly mobile while others don’t. We will also test our theoretical ideas with empirical data and students will have the opportunity to conduct their own empirical data analyses.
