- Inhalt
- Even in developed welfare states, gender inequality is persistent in many areas of life. This becomes visible in gendered occupation and field of study choices, the gender pay gap, gender differences in working hours and the takeover of unpaid care work, and, finally, the gender pension gap and differences in later life activities. A life course perspective is suitable to study the extent, causes, and consequences of these gender inequalities as it systematically integrates institutional/cultural, individual, and family level explanatory factors and provides a framework to understand processes of cumulative (dis)advantage and how these relate to normative expectations on “standard” male/female life courses.
The seminar will start with sessions to understand the life course perspective, the concept of defamilization, and relevant approaches in feminist welfare state research. Then the focus will be on empirical, mostly quantitative studies representing current research in the field. Topics will be arranged following the life course phases covering educational and school-to-work transitions, employment and care, and retirement and old age. Intersectional perspectives will be integrated where suitable.
In the last sessions of the seminar, participants will get an introduction on how to write a research project application and will have the opportunity to present their own research idea as preparation for the term paper.
