- Inhalt
- Since the beginning of the 21st century protest movements, revolutions, revolts, democratization efforts from below and hashtag movements have caught the attention of media outlets and scholars alike. From the Colour Revolutions to the so called Arab Spring, from Occupy Gezi to Fridays for Future, and from #meetoo to #blacklivesmatter: millions of people around the globe rose up for more participation and representation, to tackle outdated norms and values or to foster equality. In turn, governments and reactionary counter movements like QAnon or right wing populist movements have tried to repress these efforts and silence them in many ways.
This seminar aims at, first, providing a critical introduction and comparison of different theoretical perspectives on the complex topic of social movements, political action, networking and protest; second, at establishing a methodological and theoretical framework to analyse, understand and compare different kinds of movements. We will be looking at the transnational scope of protest movements around the globe, similarities, learning processes, successes and failures of movements.
We'll review these relationships through the lens of social movement theory. Seminar participants are asked to work together to apply frameworks and tools for understanding networked social movements. Key concepts will include: resource mobilization; political process; framing; ideologies; collective identity; protest cycles; movement structure; networks and networking etc.
This course will be held in English.
