Contents
Today, many discussions concerning migration issues suggest dramatic numbers and figures, but also very individual and practical issues in people’s daily life. Agreeing with the fact that most of people in contemporary society experience migration (directly and/or indirectly), recent social science increasingly focuses on how migration affect people’s sense of belonging and social integration. This course will closely look at the key to understand such matters, namely, diversity. The notion diversity itself may cover extensive areas, but it particularly sheds lights on the different range of migrants’ identity, belonging, and integration to the host society. In this course we focus on current migration features in Europe. The course will guide to see how the destination society have been corresponding to such dynamics during last few decades, especially in the institutional perspective. Next, the course will lead to the facet of social awareness – how the diversity has changed the everyday life in the host society, and how they actually ‘live together’ nowadays. Finally, it will explore how such changes affect migrants’ sense of belonging and integration in the host society, in light of isolation, assimilation, and integration.
