Inhalt
Educational achievement is shaping the life course of individuals in modern societies. For many immigrant groups, educational achievement tends to be lower than that of the majority population. Yet in contrast to their oftentimes lower educational achievement, educational aspirations of immigrants often exceed those of their majority counterparts. This seminar aims to shed light on the factors that are behind immigrants’ high educational aspirations. In the first part of the class, we will therefore talk about the ‘theoretical basics’, meaning we will cover what educational aspirations actually are, how they are generated and why these processes may differ for immigrants. In the second part of the class we will then discuss the ‘empirical reality’, meaning studies that assess the main arguments behind immigrants’ educational aspirations in different empirical specifications and critically assess their research design as well as their main implications.
