Inhalt
Social cohesion in European societies is challenged by existing and growing opposition against immigration and immigrants. Growing migration-critical and racist voices along with increasing support and attention for right-wing populist parties throughout Europe as well as still ongoing violent attacks against migrants, refugees and asylum seekers seemingly changed the societal und political climate in Germany and Europe. Even before the rise of Pegida and AfD in Germany, anti-immigrant attitudes have been in the focus of politics, public and science. For decades, researchers in social and related sciences investigated the question of how derogative attitudes towards foreign ethnic groups occur. There are numerous theoretical assumptions and empirical findings, but also many speculations and unresolved questions. Focuses of the seminar are common and current findings of and explanations for anti-immigrant attitudes. Purpose of the seminar is to acquire knowledge of the most important explanatory approaches and their theoretical and empirical substance as well as to compare and to criticize them.
