Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
Please register via Flexnow for the seminar until April 13, 2023. You will then be added to the Virtual Campus course where you will find further information. This module consists of two courses that have to be attended in the same semester. This course has to be combined with the course "Ethnic boundary making" (Prof. Dr. Cornelia Kristen). Requirements: Portfolio that consists of several tasks that have to be completed in the two seminars.

Inhalt
The course aims at a comprehensive understanding of different theoretical approaches to understanding contemporary migration and migrant features, with a particular focus on migrant identity and sense of belonging. Starting with the historical review from the Post-world-war era, the course will delve into the three core theories rooted in migration studies: Assimilation, Transnationalism, and Superdiversity. The students will be able to understand how those theories have affected the social norms and awareness at the national, local, and community levels while contemplating by themselves the right approach to the practical social issues for the current and future society.
The course runs entirely in English – students should have very good written and oral English skills.
Please note that the course takes an extended form of the block seminar – four days in April and a final presentation day in July – overall five days. Those who wish to attend this seminar with conflicting schedules with other courses should speak to the instructors of those courses in advance by themselves.
