Inhalt
For a long period, social sciences were characterized by the application of nonexperimental methods such as social surveys, interviewing, or direct observation. In recent decades however, experimental research has become more and more popular. Moreover, some social science questions may even be best addressed with the use of experiments, particularly those that concern causality.
This seminar picks up on these developments and introduces into the basics of experimental research. In the first part of the class, we will talk about different experimental types (laboratory, field, and vignette) and the research questions they are best suited for. In the second part of the class, we will then discuss exemplary studies for the different experimental types. We will particularly focus on experimental designs that are commonly used in migration-, and integration research. Building on these principles, we will close the class by designing own experiments.
