Inhalt
In light of the current immigration and refugee crisis and its consequences, existing and increasing opposition against immigration and immigrants is a current and future challenge for social cohesion in European societies. This is especially true considering the increasing support and attention for right populist parties throughout Europe as well as the outrages against refugees and asylum seeker housings. Even before the emergence of Pegida and AfD in Germany, anti-immigrant and anti-immigration attitudes have been in the focus of politics, public and science. For decades researchers in social (and related) sciences investigated the question of how and why derogative attitudes towards foreign ethnic groups occur. Hence there are numerous theoretical assumptions and empirical findings, but also many speculations and unresolved questions. Focuses of the seminar are common and current findings of and explanations for anti-immigrant and anti-immigration attitudes from research in the field of prejudice and right-wing extremism. Purpose of the seminar is to acquire knowledge of the most important explanatory approaches and their theoretical and empirical substance as well as to compare and to criticize them. The seminar will place particular emphasis on empirical research articles; therefore a profound basic knowledge of quantitative/statistical research methods is essential for attendance.
