Zeit und Ort: Mi 12:00 - 14:00, F21/03.48
vom 15.10.2018 bis zum 9.2.2019

Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches
Each session will include a combination of lecture by the lecturer, student presentations and a general discussion. Throughout the course each student is expected to deliver at least two presentations (one of which could be substituted by a written assignment depending on the overall number of participants). The primary working language for this seminar is English, although written assignments (if any) could be delivered in German.

Inhalt
The course will introduce students to family demography – a discipline which is broadly concerned with the study of family structures, their internal dynamics and historical evolution. The list of topics to be covered in the course includes (but is not limited to) family and household composition; partnering and union dynamics; childbearing and parenting practices; distribution of within-family gender roles; kinship networks and intergenerational ties. We will also talk about the changing meaning of family, its forms, types and dynamics in the context of wider social change, including their differences in the context of cross-national and cross-cultural variety. The goal of the course is to empower students with state-of-the-art theoretical and empirical knowledge bringing together relevant contributions from sociology, economics and demography. Such knowledge should allow them better appreciate the diversity of family forms and meanings, critically reflect on their personal and other people’s experiences, as well as skillfully engage in private and public debates regarding the above mentioned issues.
