- Inhalt
- The reciprocal relationship between individuals’ health and labor market outcomes is a central topic of modern social science research. My seminar introduces main theoretical models and empirical findings of this research area. First, the seminar introduces broader theoretical conceptions that link labor market outcomes to individuals’ health and health to labor market integration. In this vein, the seminar also introduces relevant work-stress models. Second, the course discusses the role of health during educational processes for status attainment (i.e., health selection and causation). Third, the course introduces relevant empirical papers that scrutinize the relationship between health and individual-level labor market conditions and statuses (e.g., unemployment, working hours), meso-level characteristics (e.g., shift work, firms, occupations), and macro-level phenomena (e.g., recessions or health systems). The seminar addresses students who are interested in deepening their knowledge on the importance of health for labor market processes thereby strengthening their understanding of empirical research. Students are expected to read at least one empirical paper a week, which constitutes the basis of weekly presentations and discussions. In addition to one presentation, students write up to three one-paged thesis papers (that summarize the mandatory weekly research paper) and a short final term paper. (Note that the seminar language will be German, in case only native speakers should participate.)
