- Processes of digitalization are transforming all spheres of society, from the workplace to intimate life. Comparable only to radical media revolutions like the invention of writing or the printing press, the digital transformation is providing new opportunities and obstacles for action, new ways to build and sustain social relationships, and new possibilities for thinking in and about society. Given all this newness , what are the consequences of digitalization for sociological theory? Are sociology s basic concepts like the actor , action , interaction , social relationships , society , etc. that were originally developed at the turn from the 19th to the 20th century still useful for analyzing this changing social landscape? Or does sociological theory need a fundamental re-evaluation of its conceptual toolkit and corresponding theoretical innovation? The seminar will discuss these questions by organizing a conversation between foundational texts of sociological theory and recent contributions that aim at updating or transcending these concepts.
