- Inhalt
- This course can be used for the focus “Internet and Communication”, as well as the module ST2.
The so-called “communicative turn” has changed social scientific thinking since the 1960s profoundly. It reflects the insight that society is basically constituted and structured by communication and language. Language is an essential part of human sociality. In order to give an introduction into the topic, we will read three books from different areas of communication research. We start with a classic in the field of social constructivism: “The Social Construction of Reality” written by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann. We follow up with Michael Tomasello’s “The Origin of Human Communication”, which studies the role of cooperation for communication. Finally, we will read Judith Butler’s “Excitable Speech” on the performative dimension of language.
