- Inhalt
- The narrator of a fictional text is the mediator between story and reader. It is his or her voice and vision we must rely on. But what if the narrator turns out to be less than reliable and trustworthy?
In this course, we will explore the diverse representations and functions of unreliability in three recent novels and several short stories(as well as, if time permits, in one or two films).
Various theoretical approaches to this much-debated narratological concept will supplement our own readings. Special attention will be paid to the recent reconceptualizations by Nünning and Yacobi. For a first glimpse at the concept, I suggest you read the entry on "Unzuverlässigkeit, erzählerische" in the Metzler Lexikon Literatur- und Kulturtheorie.

Note on editions: if you already have a different edition of one or more of the texts, you do not have to buy another one. But please do avoid at all costs the Cornelsen and Penguin Easy Readers versions of The Remains of the Day
