- Inhalt
- This course aims to introduce students to the so called classical period of philosophy in the Islamic world (9th to 12th century), which evolved after an extensive translation movement of Greek scientific and philosophical texts to an advanced tradition in its own right. The course provides a basic acquaintance with some of the key figures, philosophical doctrines, texts and developments of this period. After an introduction to the subject and discussion of course expectations and requirements this course will address the following topics:
– Greek logos into Arabic Nuṭq: The Abbasid revolution
– Creating philosophical terminology
– The Aristotelian conception of knowledge and the philosophical corpus
– The scientific status of Theology
– The intrinsic relationship between knowledge and happiness
– What is human intellect?
– Is an universal science possible?
– Does philosophy promise too much?
– Overview of the later development, historiography and future tasks, and Conclusion
