Participants who do not study sociology as main subject can gain equivalent certificates. This is based on the prerequisite that students attend the lectures, prepare for class (compulsory reading) and give a presentation. Additionally, students are expected to write a seminar paper.
The language of instruction will optionally be English or German, in order to facilitate international students to attend the course.

Inhalt:

Language proficiency is a crucial resource for immigrants integration into the receiving country. We focus on three main topics within the lecture: First, we discuss the basics of integration theory and analyze different types and dimensions of immigrants incorporation. Second, we address the mechanisms of language acquisition and identify the conditions under which immigrants improve their language proficiency. Furthermore, we relate language proficiency to immigrants educational outcomes and labor market success. Third, we elaborate the role of immigrants first language proficiency and first language use, which is highly controversial. In each section we discuss fundamental theoretical approaches as well as reasonable empirical evidence.

Inhalt:

During the last 60 years, European countries have increasingly become destinations for (in-ternational) immigrants and asylum seekers. Despite being a core issue for the respective national governments, many of these immigrant groups fare worse than natives in terms of labor market outcomes. Moreover, there are considerable differences between the EU countries, in how these immigrants are integrating into the respective labor markets. Yet, systematic research that explains these differences is still somewhat scarce.

This course aims to give a general overview of the cross-country differences in labor market integration and introduce crucial theoretical arguments brought forth to explain these differ-ences. We will particularly focus on the interplay between the immigrants individual characteristics and the institutional characteristics of the different destination countries.

In terms of structure, the course consists of three parts. The first part gives an overview of the immigrant population and respective labor market integration in Europe. Subsequently, theoretical arguments to explain these labor market outcomes are introduced. The second part then deals with data sources (and indicators) available to test the theoretical arguments. The third part sets out to assess the empirical evidence on how important the respective explanations are. The class will close with a thinktank on directions for future research.

Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:

Die dreitätige Blockveranstaltung vom 22.06.2016 bis 24.06.2016 ist als Lektürekurs gedacht. Es werden keine Referate im eigentlichen Sinne gehalten. Stattdessen wird erwartet, dass alle Texte von allen Studierenden gründlich gelesen und vorbereitet werden.

Welche Leistungen müssen Sie zur Erlangung eines Scheins erbringen?
Für jede der jeweils zweistündigen Unterrichtseinheiten sind auf der Basis der Pflichttexte mindestens zwei Fragen vorzubereiten, die während der Veranstaltung diskutiert werden können. Die Fragen zu sämtlichen Pflichttexten müssen mir bis Montag, den 13.06.2016 als E-Mail zugegangen sein. Maximal zwei Fragepäckchen dürfen (mit oder ohne Entschuldigung) versäumt werden.
