Inhalt:

Medievalism, the ongoing reinvention of the Middle Ages in postmedieval times, has become a major area of scholarship over the last three decades. At the heart of this scholarship has been the investigation of the vast number of cinematic representations of medieval culture from the 1922 silent Robin Hood through the soon-to-be-released King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017). From the vast harvest of medieval-themed movies (Kevin J. Harty counted as many as 900 in his 2006 The Reel Middle Ages) we will select, view, and discuss some classics as well as some lesser known examples to explore how 20th- and 21st-century screen writers, directors, studios, and actors have represented the medieval past. To inhabit our topic swiftly, we will familiarize ourselves with the critical terminology and methodologies of medievalism studies by reading Medievalism: Key Critical Terms, ed. Elizabeth Emery and Richard Utz (Cambridge: Boydell & Brewer, 2017 [paperback]). Students will have an opportunity to review some recent medievalist movies and produce research papers that, if of high quality, may be considered by external reviewers for publication in Medievally Speaking (http://medievallyspeaking.blogspot.com) and other outlets published under the auspices of the International Society for the Study of Medievalism.

Inhalt:

In diversen Blockseminaren (inklusive Exkursionen) wird das komplexe Thema des Edierens und Kommentierens im Mittelpunkt stehen, wobei Beispiele sowohl zu englischen Autoren als auch deren Übersetzer (z. B. Georg Goyert) im Mittelpunkt stehen. Studierende können sich diese Veranstaltung als Aufbaumodul oder Vertiefungsmodul (ggf. andere Module) anrechnen lassen. Die Länge der Hausarbeiten und das allgemeine Workload richten sich nach der angestrebten Modulprüfung. Die Exkursion wird aus Studienzuschüssen mitfinanziert. William Shakespeare did not write his plays in isolation. He was one of several extraordinarily talented and innovative playwrights working in the 1590s, 1600s, and 1610s. Their plays drew on older traditions, and would in turn give rise to drama in the decades to come that is also accomplished on its own terms. Indeed, although Shakespeare’s artistic merits did not go unnoticed at the time, other writers had a comparable reputation in his lifetime, and many of their works have entered alongside Shakespeare’s into the canons of English dramatic literature. In the eighteenth century, acclaim for Shakespeare reached such heights that his works became the gold standard of literary judgment: since then, study of his rivals has struggled to free itself from comparisons with Shakespeare. Some of these writers – including Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, and Thomas Middleton - are important enough in their own right to have survived the comparison almost entirely; while others – such as Thomas Kyd, John Fletcher, John Webster, John Ford, to name just a few of the most well-known – produced plays that made unique and enduring contributions to English literature. ‘Shakespeare’s Rivals’ will take students on a brief tour of non-Shakespearean drama, taking a snapshot of dramatic art in England during the most extraordinary century in its history. We will discover how plays shed light on the culture, history and society of that time; and probe the problem of literary value and endurance.

Course description:

This block seminar offers a unique chance to study one of the most formative events in American history and its lasting effects on American culture from an interdisciplinary perspective (American Studies/History). It allows participants to immerse themselves in discussions of historical documents, literary texts, and films, all in the special atmosphere of a study retreat in the French Alps. Our reading materials will include:
1) historical documents and articles about:

• slavery and abolitionism
• the founding of the Republican Party
• President Lincoln’s Election
• the Kansas Nebraska Act and Missouri Compromise
• the Southern secession

2) literary texts:

• Frederick Douglass, "The Heroic Slave" (1852)
• Harriet Jacobs, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (excerpts) (1861)
• Walt Whitman, from Leaves of Grass (1855/92), Drum Taps (1865), and Specimen Days (1882)
• Emily Dickinson, Civil War poems (1860s)
• Louisa May Alcott, from Hospital Sketches (1863)
• Stephen Crane, The Red Badge of Courage (1895)

After intensive, 4-5 hour seminar sessions on five mornings, students will have free afternoons to read and prepare their presentations (and, if you're done, explore the scenic area). In the evenings we will screen several classic and some of the most recent Civil War films, including Gone With the Wind (1939) Glory (1989), Ride with the Devil (1999), Lincoln (2012).
The seminar is open to mid-level to advanced students of English and American Studies (BA/MA, Lehramt; Vertiefungsmodul) and History. The seminar will be taught in English and German, so both languages are required.

Inhalt:

The word Darwinism is often used to refer to concepts and trends in science, philosophy, society and culture that go beyond the more narrowly subscribed object of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. This seminar indeed pursues a wide approach and looks at several ramifications of evolutionary theory in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. After studying William Paley’s arguments for the creation of the world in his Natural Theology (1802), we will throw glances at a few early proponents of the “transmutation of species”, particularly Erasmus Darwin, Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck and Robert Chambers and also consider the impact of Charles Lyell’s Principles of Geology (1830-1833). In order to fully appreciate the development of Charles Darwin’s ideas, we will read excerpts of his most important publications, i.e. The Voyage of the Beagle (1839), The Origin of Species (1859) and The Descent of Man (1871). A major emphasis will be on the controversies these publications triggered – like the clashes between Thomas Huxley and Bishop Samuel Wilberforce at Oxford or the debates between Asa Gray and Louis Agassiz at Harvard. In a further step we will ask how evolutionary ideas were appropriated by other branches of knowledge and how they were treated in literary texts, e.g. by Robert Louis Stevenson and Joseph Conrad. The term social Darwinism, popularized by the American historian Richard Hofstadter, is generally used to refer to branches of laissez-faire capitalism, specific notions of racial superiority and the support for eugenics. Texts by Francis Galton and Karl Pearson from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries illustrate some of these aberrations. In the later part of the semester, we will learn more about the controversies regarding the teaching of evolution or creationism in schools, particularly in the US. At the end of the semester, we will critically discuss the almost hagiographic reverence Darwin enjoys in certain part of the scientific community in Britain and the US.
