- Inhalt:
- This course is designed to introduce beginning students to the central terms and topics in current (English) linguistics. While the focus will be on present-day English, many modern irregularities (such as the differences between spelling and pronunciation or irregular verbs) can be explained in historical terms. We will therefore occasionally digress into the history of the English language in order to better understand the present. Topics to be dealt with include phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and sociolinguistics. One class will also be devoted to the major contrasts between English and German. In order to equip students with the basic analytical skills that are essential for future linguists and teachers alike, part of the course especially the accompanying tutorials and workshops will be practical in nature. We will therefore analyse authentic modern English texts from a linguistic point of view.

- Inhalt:
- The seminar will introduce students to the study of the English lexicon. After the discussion of various theoretical aspects, including a few basic terms such as linguistic sign, morpheme, lexeme, we will deal with the applied branch of lexicology, i.e. lexicography. We will analyse different types of dictionaries and discuss their individual advantages and drawbacks. In particular, it is intended to examine the functions of dictionaries in foreign language learning.
Participants in the seminar will be asked to prepare individual topics and present them in class. At the end of term, there will be a written exam on lexicological aspects of English.

- Inhalt:
- This seminar focuses on important areas of contrast between English and German and introduces students to the field of contrastive linguistics. Closely related though they are, the two languages differ significantly in areas such as phonology, inflectional morphology, tense and aspect, the coding of grammatical relations, the use of active and passive voice, word order, syntactic movements, non-finite complementation, and the lexicon. Aspects like these will come under close scrutiny in classwork and student presentations.
Widening the angle to include the German mother tongue offers many assets for learners and teachers of English as well as for professionals mediating between the languages: Contrastive analyses have useful implications for translation, the study of bilingualism and foreign language teaching. They allow us to gain insights unattainable by analyzing languages in isolation. Moreover, they can help us assess the nature, number and impact of the changes that have led to a differentiation of English and German in the course of 1,500 years. Finally, we can attempt to find generalizations in terms of a holistic typology underlying English-German contrasts.

Prerequisites:
Participants must have passed the Introduction to English Linguistics; ideally, participants will have passed English Phonetics and Phonology as well.
- Inhalt:
- This seminar focuses on three varieties of English in the British Isles, namely those spoken in Wales, Ireland and Scotland. Apart from exploring the respective histories of settlement, conquest and language contact that led to their emergence, we will discuss the distinctive features that characterise each of those varieties in the present day, at the levels of phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, and – to to a lesser extent – lexis. The class aims to arrive at a better understanding of what unites (or divides) the three varieties historically, linguistically and sociolinguistically, and whether or not it is helpful to think of them as the Celtic varieties of English.

- Description:
Would you – as a traveller in time – be able to talk to Geoffrey Chaucer, who died 617 years ago? Would you understand his form of English, and he yours? And what about the author of Beowulf, for instance, who lived some further 400 years before Chaucer? You would certainly have many words in common, and both the author of Beowulf and you, for instance, could understand the Old English sentence He swam west in storm and wind and frost. But then he (or she?) would have to explain to you that leode means 'people' (compare German Leute) and Chaucer would be puzzled by the word and concept of the internet, for example.
For all those with exploratory spirit and interest in the earlier stages of the English language – but with no previous knowledge of them – this guided tour will prepare the ground to venture on their own paths of discovery of the forms of the language from which modern English developed. Placing the emphasis on Middle English, you will find out about similarities and differences to modern English (and also to German), regarding sounds, words, grammar and meaning. At the end of the semester, you will be able to answer the questions asked at the beginning of this description in much more detail – and you might actually be able to talk to Chaucer; given that a time machine has been invented by then.
Knowledge of earlier stages of the English language are not required for participation in this course.

- Language and Power
Does it make a difference whether I talk to my friends or my superior? Do I listen more closely to somebody of a higher social standing? Does this person use expressions that convey power? Or is it maybe just the sound of their voice – the frequency, the pitch, a careful use of speech pauses? Are their sentences longer or shorter, simpler or more complex?
While language is a powerful tool for the exchange of information, it also conveys a great deal about the power and social standing of a speaker. The goal of this seminar is to learn about linguistic factors that can be linked to the power, dominance and social status of a speaker and how we can approach these topics empirically. Naturally, this class therefore also includes sessions that introduce you to the relevant methods and tools.
Language of instruction: English & German. While students are not required to speak or write in German, understanding German is probably helpful as discussions can be multilingual.
Sprache und Macht
Rede ich mit meinem Vorgesetzten anders als mit meinen Freunden? Höre ich jemandem aufgrund seiner sozialen Stellung eher zu? Benutzt diese Person machtvollere Worte (sprachliche Ausdrucksmittel)? Oder haben sie eine eindrucksvollere Stimme? Sprechen sie komplexer, schneller, langsamer, in kürzeren oder längeren Sätzen, mit größeren oder kleineren Pausen?
Sprache ist ein machtvolles Mittel zum Informationsaustausch, sie vermittelt uns aber auch Informationen über die Macht des Sprechenden. In diesem Seminar wollen wir uns an die Fragen heranwagen, ob die Dominanz einer Person an bestimmten sprachlichen Faktoren ausgemacht werden kann, ob und wie sich unsere Sprache in sozialen Hierarchien ändert und wie man das linguistisch erforschen könnte.
Es wird methodisches Handwerkzeug aufgezeigt, um solchen Fragen mittels verschiedener
Methoden empirisch auf den Grund zu gehen.
Unterrichtssprache: Die Unterrichtssprachen sind Englisch und Deutsch. Studenten der Germanistik sind nicht verpflichtet Englisch zu sprechen. Englischkenntnisse werden aber empfohlen, da zweisprachige Diskussionen durchaus möglich sind.

- Inhalt:
- This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master’s theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

- Description:
The Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics accompanies the linguistic seminar in the Aufbaumodul Sprachwissenschaft. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in approaching and handling data, sources of information and technologies. - Innerhalb von nicht mehr als 40 bis 50 Generationen, die zwischen der Herrschaft von König Alfred und der Gegenwart liegen, hat sich das Englische so stark verändert, dass es beim Vergleich eines altenglischen mit einem neuenglischen Text gleichen Inhalts kaum mehr als dieselbe Sprache zu erkennen ist. Viele Bereiche des Sprachsystems waren extremen Veränderungsprozessen unterworfen. Diese Tatsache und die relativ zahlreich erhaltenen Zeugnisse früherer Sprachzustände, z.B. verschiedene Bibelübersetzungen, machen das Englische zu einem lohnenden Forschungsgegenstand für die historische Linguistik.
Das Seminar bietet einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der englischen Sprache vom Altenglischen bis heute. Neben grundlegenden Aspekten der historischen Linguistik werden Kontinuität und Wandel vor allem in den Bereichen der Phonologie, der Morphologie, der Syntax und des Lexikons beleuchtet. Dabei gewinnen die Studierenden vertiefte Einblicke in den historischen Werdegang der englischen Sprache im Besonderen und in Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Sprachwandels im Allgemeinen.

- Bei der Wahl Ihres Themas im schriftlichen Staatsexamen in Linguistik haben Sie im Studiengang Lehramt an Gymnasien unter anderem die Möglichkeit, eine mittelenglische oder altenglische Textklausur zu bearbeiten. Wenn Sie sich für die Sprachgeschichte interessieren, sind Sie in diesem Vorbereitungskurs genau richtig. Mindestens zwei Semester vor Ihrem Examen, aber gern auch schon zur Orientierung früher, sollten Sie an diesem Repetitorium teilnehmen, um Ihre Kenntnis der englischen Sprachgeschichte sowie des Mittelenglischen (und gegebenenfalls auch des Altenglischen) zu vertiefen. In dieser Übung werden zum einen theoretische Fragestellungen überblicksartig geklärt, zum anderen geht es um die praktische Bearbeitung von mittelenglischen (und altenglischen) Staatsexamensklausuren der letzten Jahre. Der Schwerpunkt wird in diesem Semester erneut auf der mittelenglischen Textklausur liegen. Kursunterlagen werden auf dem "Virtuellen Campus" bereitgestellt. Das Passwort wird zu Vorlesungsbeginn bekanntgegeben. Die mittelenglischen Klausuren bauen immer auf eine stark eingegrenzte Auswahl aus den Werken Geoffrey Chaucers auf, speziell aus den Canterbury Tales und aus Troilus and Criseyde, woraus zunächst eine Passage zu übersetzen ist. Daher wird zusätzlich ein Intensivblockkurs Übersetzung Mittelenglisch-Deutsch angeboten (0,7 SWS). Nicht-modularisiert Studierende sind für die Vorbereitung auf ihr Examen in diesem Kurs ebenfalls willkommen, ebenso wie Studierende anderer Studiengänge mit vertieftem Interesse an der englischen Sprachgeschichte.

- Die Lehrveranstaltung soll gezielt auf die Klausur in englischer Sprachwissenschaft (Unterrichtsfach) vorbereiten. Zielgruppe sind Studierende des Lehramts an Grund- und Mittelschulen, Realschulen und beruflichen Schulen - vgl. hierzu die LPO (2008): LPO I, §44 (3) 1.a). Auf der Basis des verbindlich festgelegten und für ganz Bayern einheitlichen Lektürekanons sollen die im Laufe des Studiums erworbenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse wiederholt und speziell auf die Anforderungen der Prüfung hin vertieft und systematisiert werden. Besprochen werden weiterhin die Modalität der Fragestellungen bei dieser Prüfung und die zu früheren Terminen gestellten Aufgaben. Gegen Ende des Semesters werden Übungsklausuren zur Überprüfung des erreichten Kenntnisstands durchgeführt.

Es wird dringend empfohlen, mit der Vorbereitung auf die Klausur in englischer Sprachwissenschaft mindestens 1 Jahr vor Prüfungstermin zu beginnen.
- Inhalt:
- Die Lehrveranstaltung dient der intensiven Vorbereitung auf die wissenschaftliche Klausur nach LPO I §64 (3) 1b "Aufgabe aus der Sprachwissenschaft - Linguistik synchron" für das Lehramt an Gymnasien. Auf der Basis des vorgegebenen und für ganz Bayern einheitlichen Lektürekanons sollen die sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse der Studierenden in Hinblick auf die Anforderungen der Klausur erweitert und systematisiert werden. Der Schwerpunkt der Übung wird darin bestehen, zu früheren Terminen gestellte Aufgaben eingehend zu besprechen. Von den SeminarteilnehmerInnen wird erwartet, daß sie bereit sind, einzelne Klausuren detailliert vorzubereiten.
