1. Students understand recent theoretical and methodological advances in themes of family sociology: homogamy (similarity in partner traits), (consequences of) divorce and remarriage, gender inequality in education and the labor market. This will be tested by student’s presentation on a specific theme 2. Students are able to formulate the most important advances in a subtheme of family sociology (‘state of the art’), are able to identify the gaps in the literature for further social-scientific research students, and learn to develop innovative, scientifically and societally relevant research question based on the literature review. This will be tested by a written literature review-paper

- Ziel und Inhalt Dieser Kurs handelt sich um die neusten Fortschritte in der Familiensoziologie. Es hat verscheidende Ziele: 1. Dieser Kurs handelt sich um die neusten Fortschritte in der Familiensoziologie. Es hat verscheidende Ziele:

This course treats recent advances in sociology of the family. It has several aims:

a. Cross-national comparative approaches
b. Longitudinal designs
4. To learn students how to review advancement in a specific field by review of the literature on a specific subtheme (in order to prepare well for a master’s thesis)

Fortgeschrittene Analysemethoden der quantitativen Sozialforschung: Ereignisanalye I (Vorlesung) -

- Inhalt:
- Ziel dieser Vorlesung ist die Einführung in die Theorie und Anwendung der Ereignisanalyse. Die Methoden der Ereignisanalyse haben in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten mit der zunehmenden Verfügbarkeit von Längsschnittdaten in der Soziologie an Bedeutung gewonnen. Unter "Ereignisdaten" versteht man Daten, die über die genauen Zeitdauern bis zu einem Zustandswechsel und deren Abfolge informieren. Beispiele hierfür sind die Dauern von Arbeitslosigkeitsphasen in der Arbeitsmarktforschung, die "Lebensdauer" politischer Systeme in der politischen Soziologie, die Dauer von Lernprozessen in der Bildungssoziologie, die Zeitspanne bis zu einem Umzug in eine andere Region in der Mobilitätsforschung, der Zeitraum bis zur Rückfälligkeit von Straftätern in der Kriminologie, die Verweildauer von Kindern im elterlichen Haushalt in der Jugend- und Familiensoziologie etc.
Zum Kurs "Ereignisanalyse" wird parallel eine Übung stattfinden, die von Dr. Gwendolin J. Blossfeld mit Hilfe des Programms Stata und auf der Grundlage von Daten aus der Lebensverlaufsforschung und den Nationalen Bildungspanels abgehalten wird. Voraussetzung für den Erwerb eines Leistungsnachweises ist der kontinuierliche Besuch der Vorlesung und der Übung sowie die Durchführung und Abgabe von Hausarbeiten (die Einzelheiten dazu werden in der Übungen bekannt gegeben).

- Inhalt:
- The economic stability of families, the reconciliation of work and family or early education for young children are only some of the defined targets of German Family policy. These policies include a large number of marriage and family related benefits and regulations that aim at supporting families in Germany. Thereby, current family policies such as parental leave and childcare policies target particularly the length of family related employment interruptions, parental employment as well as formal childcare take-up or the division of care work among men and women. But how does each single policy influence the participation in paid and care work of mothers and fathers? And how do mechanisms vary according to parental characteristics, such as household income or individual educational attainment?
The seminar offers an introduction to family policy in Germany. By the end of the course, students will be familiar with recent developments in policy-making and observed consequences for parental employment in Germany. Throughout the course, we will use examples of family policy evaluations, such as childcare and parental leave reforms, to discuss theoretical mechanisms as well as methodological and estimation strategies of quantitative policy evaluations of the respective policy interventions. Therefore, prior knowledge of statistics up to the level of ordinary least squares regression (OLS) is assumed.

- Replication is one of the most important but also one of the most neglected tools in empirical social research. It is necessary in order to corroborate previous findings and to establish valid and systematic knowledge. This seminar is designed as a hands-on course, providing its participants with the opportunity to conduct their own replications studies. The seminar is open for international students. If international students are among the participants, it will be held in English language.

- Each session is devoted to a core topic. As a basis for discussion, all participants have to read one or two central texts per week. In addition, each participant has to take over the chair of one session (this can be done in groups of two or three), which includes a short presentation based on additional literature. The job of the session chair is to structure the session by developing topic-related questions or theses and to moderate the discussion. Work load: 180h, of which 30h on-site Exam options: presentation with term paper
- Inhalt:
- The seminar deals with the transition from education to the labour market. We will read and discuss the main theoretical approaches that connect education to labour market placement and outcomes. In addition, we will consider how country differences in the setup of educational systems and labour market structures influence the transition from school to work. The theoretical considerations will be complemented by a discussion of empirical studies.
