„Übersetzer sind Urheber der Weltliteratur“

„Übersetzer sind Sprachkünstler von eigenem Rang, ohne deren Neuerschaffungsarbeit das Werk, ob seichter Schmachtfetzen oder sogenannte Höhenkammliteratur, die Grenze der eigenen Nationalliteratur nicht überschreiten und kein globales Kultur- oder Bildungsgut werden kann. Wir Übersetzer sind Urheber von Übersetzungen, aber wir sind noch viel mehr: Wir sind die Urheber der Weltliteratur“, so schreibt die renommierte Übersetzerin Christa Schuenke in ihrem online-Artikel „Urheber der Weltliteratur“ ( http://www.christa-schuenke.de/aktuelles/presse.htm#yeats; Zugriff: 08.01.2019 ). Umso bedauerlicher ist es, dass die größte zweisprachige Lyrik-Anthologie“ aus dem HörVerlag zwar „Kurzbiographien der Autoren“ (Begleitheft, S. 13-107) und „Kurzbiographien der Sprecher“ (S. 109-29), aber keine biographischen Informationen zu den 76 Übersetzer/innen bietet. Diese Lücke soll in gemeinsamer Seminar- und Onlinearbeit gefüllt werden, indem wir analog der biographischen Einträge aus einem früheren Projekt ( http://www.shakespearealbum.de/informationen.html ) diese Kurzbiographien erarbeiten und später online zu Verfügung stellen werden.

Schwerpunkt des Seminars ist somit einerseits eine stark berufsorientierte Ausrichtung, indem die Studierenden das Arbeitsfeld des Lektorats bei einem deutschsprachigen Verlag durch eigenständiges Recherchieren und Arbeiten kennenlernen. Andererseits sollen sich die Studierenden mit einzelnen der 94 Lyrikerinnen und Lyrikern der englischsprachigen Welt eigenständig und intensiver beschäftigen, um sich in dem schwierigen Feld der Themenfindung für eine Qualifikationsarbeit zu üben. Hier werden individuelle Beratungen angeboten, indem die Themeneingrenzung und Entwicklung einer wissenschaftlichen Fragestellung gemeinsam erarbeitet werden soll.

Die Lyrik-Anthologie sowie weitere Materialien werden im Semesterapparat zur Verfügung gestellt.

Inhalt:

Sometimes we encounter works that perplex us: literal holes appear on every page; sentences never end; syntax doesn’t make sense; a film displays nothing but moving shapes and colors; words look like pictures. Sometimes a poem is organized like a film, or an author may refuse to use the letter “e.” Why do these experimental texts exist? How do we make sense of them? The course will combine theory and a collection of sample texts in our effort to understand and even produce avant-garde literature and film. Be ready to theorize the “avant-garde,” apply those frameworks to the literature, film, and performance pieces we study, and experiment with your own creations.

Inhalt:

The last decades have seen a dramatic increase in popular cultural products that appear to address environmental issues from a variety of critical perspectives. But do they? What happens when current multi-million blockbuster films focus on the land, the oceans, other-than-human creatures, and human-nonhuman relationships? How do such films’ seemingly overt environmental perspectives relate to their more complicated cultural and political subtexts, and how do we negotiate their green gestures with their implication in big business?

This seminar combines the study of American popular culture with the critical tools developed by environmental literary and cultural criticism in order to discuss the generic conventions, storylines, and aesthetic choices of recent films in conjunction with their potential ecological relevance. Focusing on a paradigmatic set of films such as The Day after Tomorrow (2004, SciFi disaster), Avatar (2009, SciFi), Chasing Ice (2012, documentary), Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012, drama), and The Jungle Book (2017, fantasy adventure / Disney remake), we will also analyze the intersection of environmental concerns with those of racial justice and gender equality, regional and global perspectives, and recent debates about nonhuman others and their agency.

Students should come to this seminar with an interest in bringing complex theoretical and conceptual approaches to the study of American cultural products.

Inhalt:

The nineteenth century marks a key moment not only in the history of American literature and culture, but also in the development of America s environmental thought. This upper level seminar addresses key aspects of American environmental history in a decidedly interdisciplinary fashion, combining theoretical concepts and approaches from the fields of Historiography with those of American Literary and Cultural Studies. We will first discuss the two fields respective conceptual frameworks and methods (environmental historiography, and environmental literary and cultural studies). From this double perspective, we will then explore issues such as the environmental significance of the Westward movement, the settler-colonial warfare against Native Americans, the emergence of ecology and other increasingly specialized natural sciences, key arguments of early conservationist and preservationist debates and controversies over the first national parks, and links between slavery, Civil War, and views of the nonhuman environment. Our discussions will be based on a wide range of readings, including classic nature essays, autobiographical texts, regionalist short stories, nature poems, and slave narratives. Students have to read all texts before the beginning of the seminar week.

Organization:

This compact seminar (Blockseminar), taught by Prof. Christine Gerhardt (American Studies) and Prof. Sabine Freitag (Modern and Contemporary History), offers a unique chance to study formative aspects of American environmental history in the special atmosphere of a study retreat in the French Alps (Chalet Giersch, Manigod), from Aug. 25 (Sunday) Sept. 01 (Sunday) 2019.
We can accommodate 18 students (ideally 9 from History, 9 from English/American Studies).

Inhalt:

The video game has now emerged as a dominant media form of contemporary American culture. This seminar will examine the video game as a storytelling medium, addressing the features that distinguish video games from other narrative texts. We will study the relationship of video games to literature in today's global media ecology, the transformation of the "text" from a discrete object to a transmedia narrative system. We will also investigate the ways that video games position themselves as interactive fictions whose characters, plotlines and gameplay mechanics draw upon, and contribute to, broader literary traditions.

Inhalt:

Among the entries for the word persuasion in the Oxford English Dictionary we find this definition: "A form or system of religious belief; a creed. In later use also: a school of thought, esp. in politics. Usually with modifying word." Where persuasion is used in the political sense as in the title to this seminar it generally implies that people hold some deep convictions about the individual, society and the purpose of government that have become part of their identities. "Political Persuasions" also suggests that people's attitudes towards certain policy questions from abortion to the war on terror, from affirmative action to woke culture are systematically related. After some introductory sessions on the history of political philosophy and the elements of American democracy, this seminar studies schools of thought that have shaped American politics since World War II. Apart from major distinctions like left-wing and right-wing or conservative and progressive/liberal, we will look at finer gradations that demonstrate the complexity of American political thought. What are Old vs. New Democrats? How can we distinguish a paleoconservative from a neoconservative? Do libertarians fit into the left-right distinction? How should more recent phenomena like the intersectional left or the alt-right be classified? And should "Trumpism" be regarded as a school of thought? In regard to foreign policy, how do labels such as isolationist, idealist, and realist or hawkish vs. dovish for that matter fit into these categories? What do the "archetypes" of American foreign politics, Hamiltonian, Wilsonian, Jeffersonian, and Jacksonian, mean? The seminar is also interested in the way these political persuasions have organized institutionally within the major political parties, in think tanks, around newspapers and magazines and in the blogosphere.
