A basic understanding of hypotheses testing with univariate and bivariate statistics as well as linear and logistic regression is essential for the successful completion of the course.

- Dieser Kurs behandelt die neusten Fortschritte in der Familiensoziologie. Er hat unterschiedliche Ziele:
1. Über spezifische Themen der Familiensoziologie, wie Homogamie (Ähnlichkeiten in Partnermerkmalen), Konsequenzen von Ehescheidung, und Geschlechtsunterschiede in der Ausbildung und am Arbeitsmarkt zu lehren.
2. Wichtige theoretische und methodische Fortschritte in dieser Forschung abzuhandeln:
a. Makro-mikro Interaktionen b.
Nationalvergleichende Designs und Longitudinale Designs
3. Studenten zu lehren die neusten Fortschritte in einem Teilgebiet der Familiensoziologie zu formulieren auf Basis eines Literatur-Reviews (für eine gute Vorbereitung der Masterarbeit).
Aim and contents
This course treats recent advances in sociology of the family. It has several aims:
1. To lecture on specific themes within sociology of the family: homogamy (similarity in partner traits), (consequences of) divorce and remarriage, gender inequality in education and the labor market
2. To treat important theoretical and methodological improvements within this research
a. Macro-micro interactions
b. Cross-national comparative approaches and longitudinal designs
3. To learn students how to review advancement in a specific field by review of the literature on a specific subtheme (in order to prepare well for a master’s thesis)

Fortgeschrittene Analysemethoden der quantitativen Sozialforschung: Ereignisanalyse I (Vorlesung) -

- Ziel dieser Vorlesung ist die Einführung in die Theorie und Anwendung der Ereignisanalyse. Die Methoden der Ereignisanalyse haben in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten mit der zunehmenden Verfügbarkeit von Längsschnittdaten in der Soziologie an Bedeutung gewonnen. Unter "Ereignisdaten" versteht man Daten, die über die genauen Zeitdauern bis zu einem Zustandswechsel und deren Abfolge informieren. Beispiele hierfür sind die Dauern von Arbeitslosigkeitsphasen in der Arbeitsmarktforschung, die "Lebensdauer" politischer Systeme in der politischen Soziologie, die Dauer von Lernprozessen in der Bildungssoziologie, die Zeitspanne bis zu einem Umzug in eine andere Region in der Mobilitätsforschung, der Zeitraum bis zur Rückfälligkeit von Straftätern in der Kriminologie, die Verweildauer von Kindern im elterlichen Haushalt in der Jugend- und Familiensoziologie etc.
Zum Kurs "Ereignisanalyse" wird parallel eine Übung stattfinden, die von Dr. Gwendolin J. Blossfeld mit Hilfe des Programms Stata und auf der Grundlage von Daten aus der Lebensverlaufsforschung und den Nationalen Bildungspanels abgehalten wird. Voraussetzung für den Erwerb eines Leistungsnachweises ist der kontinuierliche Besuch der Vorlesung und der Übung sowie die Durchführung und Abgabe von Hausarbeiten (die Einzelheiten dazu werden in der Übung bekannt gegeben).

- Dieses Seminar beschäftigt sich mit zwei Themenkomplexen: Migrationsbedingten Ungleichheiten im Bereich Bildung und Segregation. Nach zwei Sitzungen, die sich mit dem Ausmaß migrationsbedingter Bildungsungleichheiten und gängigen soziologischen Erklärungen derselben beschäftigen, werden in den folgenden Sitzungen verschiedene Konzepte sozialer Segregation (z. B. auf Nachbarschaftsebene, auf Schulebene, auf Freundesebene etc.) und ihrer Ursachen diskutiert. Die verbleibenden Sitzungen widmen sich Studien, die sich mit den Folgen von Segregation für Bildungsungleichheiten beschäftigen. Dabei werden neben Effekten auf den Bildungserfolg auch Effekte auf andere Dimensionen wie soziale Kohäsion besprochen.
This seminar focusses on two main issues: disparities in the educational attainment of immigrant and non-immigrant students and segregation. After two sessions dealing with the amount of ethnic educational inequality as well as sociological explanation of these inequalities, we will examine different concepts of social segregation (e.g., residential, school, and friendship segregation) and their causes. The rest of the sessions will deal with consequences of segregation for disparities in education. Here, we will discuss effects on educational attainment and other effects such as those related to social cohesion.

- During the last 60 years, European countries have increasingly become destinations for (international) immigrants and asylum seekers. Despite being a core issue for the respective national governments, many of these immigrant groups fare worse than natives in terms of labor market outcomes. Moreover, there are considerable differences between the EU countries, in how these immigrants are integrating into the respective labor markets. Yet, systematic research that explains these differences is still somewhat scarce.
This course aims to give a general overview of the cross-country differences in labor market integration and introduce crucial theoretical arguments brought forth to explain these differences. We will particularly focus on the interplay between the immigrants’ individual characteristics and the institutional characteristics of the different destination countries.
In terms of structure, the course consists of three parts. The first part gives an overview of the immigrant population and respective labor market integration in Europe. Subsequently, theoretical arguments to explain these labor market outcomes are introduced. The second part then deals with data sources (and indicators) available to test the theoretical arguments. The third part sets out to assess the empirical evidence on how important the respective explanations are. The class will close with a “thinktank” on directions for future research.

- Germany has long been known for its considerably low maternal labour force participation rate, long employment interruptions after childbirth, high part- time rates, and a substantial motherhood penalty. Thus, and in line with EU policy-making, Germany has implemented a major childcare expansion to increase employment among mothers with under-three year old children. During the course of the childcare expansion, childcare attendance rates have increased considerably across Germany, albeit starting from low levels in West Germany.
The seminar offers an introduction to the research on non-parental childcare for under-threes, often referred to as Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC). In the seminar we will, firstly, look at different empirical studies on the effects of formal childcare on early child development. Secondly, we will look at childcare policies in Europe, focusing particularly on the recent expansion in Germany. We will discuss various aspects such as the role of childcare quality, inequalities in access to service providers as well as consequences of childcare take-up such as maternal employment participation. Throughout the course, we will use theoretical core readings as well as empirical research papers applying both cross-sectional and longitudinal research designs. Therefore, prior knowledge of statistics up to the level of ordinary least squares regression (OLS) is assumed.
Examination procedure includes an oral presentation and a seminar paper.

Students should be familiar with the contents of the compulsory lecture “Research design” and multiple linear and binary logistic regression analysis. Moreover, students are required to be familiar with any statistics package of their choice (e.g. Stata, SPSS, R, …) to be able to work on their empirical research. These skills could either be acquired or refreshed in self-studies or by attending a relevant course at the methods chair.
Language of instruction: English.
Module-related examination: Term paper (time: 3 months); written in English.

Replications are an essential part of science as they fulfil several functions: they allow the validation or rejection of previous results, improve precision, help to find errors or weak spots and can extend internal and external validity. In this seminar, participants will replicate a previous study. After a brief introduction of the theoretical foundations of replications, participants will have the choice to pick a study of their interest and work on the replication during the semester. In regular meetings, participants will present their progress, which will be discussed in the plenary sessions. The sessions include a lab session where students are assisted with their statistical analyses. The final grade depends on the term paper (100%).
Note that this course is partially blocked as there is not a session every week. Meeting dates will be provided during the first seminar session.
