Inhalt:

The year is 2020 and we still celebrate, regardless of age, the 155 years of The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland, the 120 years of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, over 90 years of Winnie-the-Pooh and centuries or millennia of fables and fairy tales. Young Adult publications have also been catapulted forward in the last two decades, a boom easily exemplified by the commercial success of Harry Potter and other book series.
This course proposes to revisit Children’s Literature classics and an in-depth and critical analysis of texts which made many a childhood. Together, we will outline the development of Children’s Literature from Antiquity to Contemporary times, understand the construction of childhood and the concept of family in various literary texts as well as study the pedagogical functions of fables, fairy tales and children’s stories (including recent Disney renditions). Furthermore, the course will provide an overview of Young Adult Literature and the recent boost the genre has received. Materials will include novels, comic books, graphic novels and film adaptations and the focus will be directed towards political and identity issues in the X-Men comics, and V for Vendetta and the place of these publications in the development of teenagers and young adults.

Inhalt:

In 1976, the British public was struck by two singular verses: “I am an antichrist! / I am an anarchist!”, screamed by a cynical jeering voice of a certain Johnny Rotten, who fronted a group shamelessly called Sex Pistols. The shock provoked both indignation and admiration that soon had an international impact and kick started a new generation of young artists inspired by it under the common denominator of “punk”.

This “punk” denominator was very soon split up into various others: new wave, industrial, goth etc., and its impact seems to resonate throughout pop culture and beyond, even today. Because of its defiant attitude, destructive, yet playful creativity, and fast developing related and post-tendencies around the world, it was soon suggested that punk resembles futurism, dada, situationism or other avant-garde movements and tendencies.

With focus on English- and Italian-speaking cultural areas, this course will provide food for thought and discussions about avant-garde aesthetics, gender, and how they manifest, if they do, in punk and related tendencies in pop culture. While it is a widespread viewpoint that punk is just about the music, the course aims at the portrayal of its literary value, through its lyrics, poetry and later developed fiction with examples from Cyberpunk, Steampunk and Feminist Punk. The possible ethical and political meanings of such expression will also be presented and discussed, since political engagement is one of the central aspects of both the avant-garde and punk.

Students of Italian language and literature will also have separate sessions for analysis of Italian texts in its original language.

Die Übung/das Kolloquium wendet sich vornehmlich an Studierende der Britischen Kultur in höheren Semestern. Es versteht sich als offenes wissenschaftliches Forum, in dem B.A.- und M.A.-Arbeiten, Magisterarbeiten, Dissertationen oder andere kulturwissenschaftlich relevante Projekte auch unter Beteiligung von Gästen zur Diskussion stehen. Zugleich bietet dieses Forum auch die Möglichkeit, eher formal orientierte Fragestellungen der Praxis zu diskutieren (z. B. Präsentationsformen bei Vorträgen/Referaten, Redaktion von Texten).

Zudem werden berufsorientierte Veranstaltungen durchgeführt, die den Studierenden Einblick in verschiedene Berufsmöglichkeiten geben sollen.

Inhalte für Vertiefungsmodul: ein Spezialgebiet. In diesem Modul werden die Kenntnisse einer weiteren Epoche bzw. einer weiteren kulturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellung vermittelt, die mit eigener regelmäßiger Lektüre begleitet wird. Zudem werden berufsrelevante Schlüsselqualifikationen (z.B. Präsentations- und Kommunikationstechniken) ausdifferenziert und vertieft. Mündliche und schriftliche Präsentation eigener Ergebnisse wird eingeübt.

The colloquium is intended primarily for advanced students of British culture. It is to be understood as an open academic forum in which B.A. and M.A. essays, Magister and other dissertations, or other projects in the realm of cultural studies, can be discussed in the presence of participating guests. At the same time, this forum offers the opportunity to discuss more formal questions of academic practice (e.g. presentational methods for lectures and presentations, composition of texts).

In addition, sessions will be organized with a more vocational orientation, intended to give the students insight into various professional possibilities.

Contents ("Vertiefungsmodul"): An area of expert knowledge. This module allows students to acquire knowledge of an additional period and of an additional cultural studies problem, all accompanied by appropriate regular reading. Furthermore, certain key professional skills (e.g. presentational and communicational techniques) will be refined and deepened. There will be practice in the spoken and written presentation of the students’ research results.

Academic outcomes "Vertiefungsmodul": Students deepen their acquaintance with the culture of English speaking countries and also of cultural theory. Each student acquires an area of expert knowledge, takes on board – in a critical spirit – contemporary tendencies in research, while learning to maintain an appropriate academic register and to apply it to complex discipline-specific problems.

Inhalt:

The re-telling of history through film has become an integral part of our culture. For many of us, films provide our most immediate access to our history – no matter how historically ‘accurate’ the film is or claims to be. The films we will be dealing in our seminar are portrayals and reenactments of historical events rather than factual documentaries. Upon completion of this course, you will have developed a broader knowledge of complex ways in which fact interplays with fiction through film. You will also develop greater skills in the use of video for the purposes of teaching and presentation.

Inhalt:

In this seminar we will have a closer look at the job of an archivist as a possible career option for a student of British Culture. We will visit various archives in the area to learn more about the key duties of an archivist (e.g. evaluating, selecting, retrieving and arranging materials, answering queries, organising exhibitions etc.).

One of the workshops will be co-taught by Dr Oliver Walton. He will challenge ideas about what (cultural) historians do by giving an outline of the diverse ways in which the Royal Collection Trust and the Royal Archives work with history and culture. Dr Walton brings a unique perspective to bear as an historian working in the Royal Archives on a number of major projects which rely upon extensive partnership with other organisations. The Georgian Papers Programme ( https://georgianpapers.com ) and the Prince Albert project ( https://albert.rct.uk/ ) are large digitisation projects, while others are more traditional in nature.

During the seminar we will also explore the current landscape of higher education and the implications for the graduate job market in the UK, as well as the variety of career paths available within the British system. The main focus will be on exploring the projects in which the course convenors are involved, which will give an insight into the range of roles and activities involved in presenting historic documents to a wide range of audiences. This should enhance students understanding of both public history in practice, and the career opportunities that this understanding may present for them. We will also discuss the situation in Germany together with Horst Gehringer, Director of the Stadtarchiv in Bamberg.

You will need to take notes during the workshops, so please be prepared: pen and paper may be a good idea. However, the aim of the seminar is not that you take away pages and pages of notes, but that you take away lots of useful ideas and helpful experience. The workshop will be held in English and German. While explanations of particular points can be given in either language, you will need to have a reasonable level of comprehension in both.

This lecture provides an overview of America's literary history, focusing on the colonial era, the enlightenment, and romanticism.

The thematic, formal and stylistic features of a wide range of texts—sermons, travelogues, poems, essays, short stories, and novels—will be discussed in the broader context of America's cultural and intellectual history. In order to understand how different groups of Americans have imagined their culture at specific moments in time, we will analyze texts that address the diversity of American experiences in terms of religion, race, class, gender, region, and political conviction. We will also explore how texts from different genres have critically engaged with the past and with other cultures, charting new directions for the relationship between literature and culture.

Overall, we will interrogate to which degree processes of modernization and the ideal of democratization can be understood as American literature's driving forces.

Both Doctor Who and Star Trek have been mainstays of science fiction TV for more than five decades. Apart from having produced enormous amounts of content during this time, the respective canons of Star Trek and Doctor Who have also expanded exponentially into a variety of media, such as TV, film, books, or video games. In addition to commissioned media, both shows have found a basis of sustained interest in their respective fandoms, be it in fanfiction, fanfilm, or fanart. It is this decades-long cultural influence and the shows’ intertextuality that make them productive topics for scholarly investigation.
This course will use a variety of theoretical approaches to the study of literature and popular culture, TV shows, and fandom in general, among them Horkheimer and Adorno’s concept of the “culture industry,” Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach to cultural materials, and Henry Jenkins’ work on fan culture, to approach Doctor Who and Star Trek and interrogate their continued success in and influence on British and American science fiction in particular and popular culture in general.

This course is designed for students who are preparing or working on a final thesis in American literature or culture, be it a "Magisterarbeit," "Zulassungsarbeit," "BA-Arbeit" or Master’s thesis. It offers continuous support during the process of preparing or writing the thesis, and provides an opportunity to share parts of it with other students. The course consists of plenary and individual sessions; the syllabus and readings will be available on the Virtual Campus.

In the plenary sessions, we will discuss general criteria and formal aspects of a thesis – such as possible topics and research questions, theoretical approaches, and structural issues. Participants will present (parts of) their thesis for discussion and feedback. The individual sessions consist of one-to-one tutorials in which you will discuss the argument and structure of your thesis with me. For students who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies in the BA, MA and new teacher training programs, this course provides the "Betreuungsübung."

This course aims to assist students in the Basismodul in writing their first term paper in literary or cultural studies in Bamberg. We will discuss general formal aspects and content related criteria of an academic paper, such as possible topics, structure, suitable theoretical approaches. Primarily, however, we will practice how to choose a topic, how to develop a coherent structure, how to involve theoretical frameworks, and how to adhere to the MLA citation rules. Finally, we will discuss the different types of source material that are suitable for the list of references of your paper. Students have the chance to present a provisional outline in a closed discussion forum, where they will receive feedback from fellow students and the instructor.

This course is also addressed at students in the Vertiefungsmodul who are preparing or working at a BA-thesis in American Literature or Culture. Therefore, this course provides the guidance sessions for the BA thesis (Betreuungsübung) for students in the BA programs who write their thesis in literary or cultural studies. It assists students in the preparation of their final paper, and gives them an opportunity to discuss their work with other students. BA-candidates will present parts of their final paper, offering it for discussion and feedback. If you are planning to attend this class, make sure that the instructor will also be your thesis advisor. Please contact Ms. Konopka well in advance to discuss your topic and the requirements for the supervision.

This course provides an overview of important approaches in the theory of culture. We will study key texts that have influenced the discipline of Cultural Studies in the Anglo-American world and beyond. Rather than being based on a lecture-style instruction, this class should be understood as a forum to discuss students’ positions toward the texts. A thorough preparation of the respective material is therefore imperative.

“Utopia” has always been associated with America. Thomas More, who coined the term and established the (modern) genre of utopian literature with the publication of Utopia (1516), took inspiration for his description of the fictional island of Utopia from the travel accounts of Amerigo Vespucci and Christopher Columbus (Veiera, “The concept of utopia” 3). In turn, his work—together with the “earthly paradise” these early explorers described—shaped European ideas about a “New World Eden” that led persecuted religious groups such as the Puritans to leave England in the hope of establishing a model “City Upon a Hill” in the “Promised Land” across the Atlantic. During the struggle for independence, this “early, pre-national utopian imaginary” (Paul, The Myths that Made America 12) was transformed into a “consciously constructed new world utopia” (Ostendorf, as qtd. In Paul 12) that also entered the founding documents of the United States. The famous preamble of the Constitution of 1789 for example reads: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, [….] do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” As some scholars have suggested, the Republic that is established with this document is not simply declared a “more perfect Union” than the American colonies here, it is also established as a utopian project, that is, as a political project that depends on an ongoing struggle for “a more perfect Union.”

Associated with such enduring cultural narratives as the “American Adam” and “Manifest Destiny,” the utopian imagination has always been associated with ideas of liberty and progress in U.S. American Culture. Yet, from the very beginning, it has also been linked to horrific acts of violence, including but not limited to colonization (as a political movement to settle the “New World”), slavery (as an economic system intent to develop the “American Garden”), and the eugenics movement of the late 19th century (as a pseudo-scientific project to improve the “American Race”). In this course, we will explore the tenacious link between utopia and violence in American culture. Focusing on historical documents from the early 16th to the mid-19th century, we will discuss what forms the “American Utopia” took at different points in time and what kinds of violence were glossed over or considered permissible in order to achieve it. Reading selected literary utopias from the late 19th and early 20th century, we will examine how gender, race, and class conflict are depicted in these texts, and what role nature and technology play in how these texts imagine “more perfect” but not necessarily “less violent” futures.
