- Inhalt:
- In the OED, slang is defined as "the special vocabulary used by any set of persons of a low or disreputable character; language of a low and vulgar type". The idea of slang as an inferior variety is reflected not just in current debates about youth culture and the speech patterns of ethnic minorities in the US and the UK. The ways in which certain groups define themselves linguistically has been a constant topic of discussion and a field of interest for many linguists.
In this seminar, we will investigate some of the mechanisms behind varieties of English which inform interlocutors about the group identity of their speakers. The idea is to gain a deeper understanding of not just specific features of certain varieties but also the motivation behind the rich repertoire of slang expressions. Among the topics dealt with in the seminar are African-American Vernacular English, the emerging variety of Multicultural London English and media representations in music (particularly hip-hop and grime) and film.

- Inhalt:
- Whether we have grown up with one, two or more languages in our early childhood, many of us engage in learning additional languages later on, thus further extending our means of communication, perception and reflection. The academic field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) studies the human capacity to learn second, foreign or heritage languages after one or more first language(s) have already been acquired.
In this seminar we will explore the interdisciplinary subject from a linguistic, psychological and social perspective. Underlying theories, research methods and major findings will be investigated in order to address questions such as what it is exactly that is learnt in SLA, how this knowledge is acquired and why some learners turn out to be more successful than others. A particular focus will be on recent influences of digitization on informal and formal second language learning, for purposes of which we will also collaborate with the DigiZ (Kompetenzzentrum für Digitales Lehren und Lernen).

- Inhalt:
- Journalistic media are an everyday resource, providing information about events outside of our immediate horizon of experience. Hence journalism is regarded as the most important textual system of modernity.
This course approaches journalism from a linguistic perspective to explore what exactly the features of this textual system are. Throughout the semester we will contrast the compositional structure of different journalistic genres (e.g. news, feature, interview, and commentary), and discuss how their communicative modes differ depending on the publishing context. We will illustrate how journalistic language differs between various newspapers (e.g. the THE GUARDIAN or THE SUN), and how communication is shaped by technological variables, if we compare print to broadcast or online journalism.
In order to explore these aspects hands-on, this course will familiarize students with qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis (such as (critical) discourse analysis and register analysis), and will introduce them to relevant broader concepts (such as audience design, multimodality, and general principles and features of written and spoken communication).

- Inhalt:
- It is estimated that at the time of Elizabeth I (1533-1603) there were at most seven million native speakers of English, all of whom lived in the British Isles, whereas today there are approximately 350 million native speakers in different parts of the world. But apart from being used as a native language in countries such as in Great Britain, Ireland, the USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, English is also employed in many other forms and functions around the globe, namely as a second language (e.g. India, Nigeria) or as a foreign language (e.g. Germany, Japan). The seminar will therefore be concerned with varieties of English from a global perspective. We will discuss the characteristic features of these varieties in terms of their pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and spelling. Moreover, it is intended to explore the principles that underlie the variation of English in different areas. Our objective will be to show how the varieties of English have developed and what factors have influenced the divergence of English in general.

Please note that in order to take part in this seminar it is necessary to have already acquired a solid knowledge of the basics of language pedagogy. It is also necessary to arrange a personal appointment with Dr. Schmidt during the last week of the semester break.
- Inhalt:
- This interdisciplinary seminar is aimed at students who are planning to embark on a career in (or related to) English Language Teaching. It will combine linguistic insights into the lexicon with pedagogical considerations for vocabulary teaching.
For one, psycholinguistic research into the so-called mental lexicon has shed light on processes of vocabulary acquisition, storage, word recognition and lexical retrieval. For another, lexicological investigation has drawn attention to the complex nature of the English lexicon with regard to basic and advanced vocabulary, regional, stylistic and etymological layering, as well as levels below and above the word (word formation, word families, collocations, phraseological units).
After familiarizing students with the major findings, methods and resources of these areas of research, we will turn to implications for vocabulary teaching, which is one of the tasks that English teachers are confronted with almost daily at all levels. Aspects to be addressed will include the choice and sequencing of vocabulary items, an overview of the phases of systematic vocabulary work, strategies to ensure the desired success, and factors influencing retention rates (including individual, methodological and linguistic factors). These will also be demonstrated and discussed using examples from teaching practice.
Students can obtain credit points either in English Linguistics or in English Language Pedagogy (Fachdidaktik). According to their choice, they register for this seminar in the respective area in FlexNow.

- This seminar is designed for advanced students. One aim is to provide a forum for the preparation and discussion of projects such as BA theses, Master's theses, Staatsarbeiten and PhD projects. We will thus discuss empirical and methodological issues relevant to such studies. Secondly, there will be hands-on presentations of the new research facilities for English linguist(ic)s at Bamberg University, the focus being on the variety of newly acquired English text collections. A third goal is to discuss current trends in linguistics, which will involve discussion of recent and forthcoming publications as well as conference and book reports. Where appropriate, additional meetings with individual subgroups of the class will be offered.

- Inhalt:
- Variation and change are central properties of all languages. Thus, rather than speaking of one "English", it is more adequate to conceive of multiple "Englishes" or at least of English as a pluricentric language. In this class, we'll take a synchronic and diachronic look at the fact that English is by no means a monolithic entity, but has evolved and changed in the course of time, leading to present-day variation on all linguistic levels.
More specifically, we'll consider general processes at work in language change (such as language contact, standardization and grammaticalization), have a look at different present-day varieties of English (such as standard varieties, traditional dialects and postcolonial Englishes) and corresponding sociolinguistic factors, and analyze the influence of sociohistorical developments. In addition, we'll critically assess views of language change as language decay and, by way of considering key studies in the field, examine different research methods used.

There is no reading week in this class.
Mainly due to several holidays, the number of core sessions will be relatively small. To compensate for this, there will be two additional formats/dates:
- One extra session will take place on Friday, 3 July, in KR12/02.05, from 10-12 am.
- Prior to presentations, I will meet the respective groups of participants not simply for a general office hour, but for a discussion of approx. 60-90 minutes. Non-presenters are invited to participate in this.
- Inhalt:
- This seminar focuses on the kinds of English used in Ireland. Beyond purely linguistic aspects, the topic is approached from historical, political and identity-related angles.
- We set out by discussing the historical background of the variety. For example: When and how was English established in Ireland and how did colonialism and language contact with the Irish and Scots languages influence the variety? We will gain an understanding of past and present language attitudes and policies concerning those different languages (English, Irish, Ulster Scots) and their potential consequences for the linguistic landscape of Ireland.
- We will discuss general aspects of political conflicts and developments of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (e.g. the Great Famine, Home-rule movement, Easter Rising, Irish War of Independence, Anglo-Irish Treaty 1921, Irish Civil War, Republic of Ireland Act 1948, ) and their consequences for socio-political identity-building and linguistic attitudes and behaviours.
- We will discuss descriptions of some present-day Irish Englishes at all linguistic levels (phonology, morphology and syntax, lexicon). This will include discussions of the sociolinguistics and structural characteristics of some regional (including urban) varieties of Irish English, and the identities of the respective speech communities.
- In view of current political developments in the context of Brexit, we will discuss more recent lines of conflict, changing affiliations and their possible effects on (linguistic) identity construction and, consequently, language variation and change in Ireland.

- Description:
Would you as a traveller in time be able to talk to Geoffrey Chaucer, who died 620 years ago? Would you understand his form of English, and he yours? And what about the author of Beowulf, for instance, who lived some further 400 years before Chaucer? You would certainly have many words in common, and both the author of Beowulf and you, for instance, could understand the Old English sentence He swam west in storm and wind and frost. But then he (or she?) would have to explain to you that leode means 'people' (compare German Leute) and Chaucer would be puzzled by the word and concept of, say, the world wide web.
For all those with exploratory spirit and interest in the earlier stages of the English language but not necessarily with previous knowledge of them this guided tour will prepare the ground to venture on their own paths of discovery of the forms of the language from which modern English developed. You will find out about similarities and differences of Old English and particularly Middle English to modern English (and also to German), regarding sounds, words, grammar and meaning. At the end of the semester, you will be able to answer the questions asked at the beginning of this description in much more detail and you might actually be able to talk to Chaucer; given that a time machine has been invented by then. Master students are asked to contribute additional scholarly depth on the Old and Middle English language systems and issues of language change through their contibutions, in particular their oral presentations. As indicated above, knowledge of earlier stages of the English language is no requirement for participation in this course.

The Übung Methods and Theories in Linguistics accompanies the linguistic seminar in the Ergänzungsmodul Sprachwissenschaft. It complements the theoretical and methodological insights and skills in this area. The Übung will introduce and put to work techniques and approaches characteristic of English Linguistics and thereby help students to acquire competence in using specific sources of information and technologies as well as in collecting, analysing and visualizing their own empirical data. The topics treated will include aspects of academic writing (handling secondary literature, referencing), the analysis of linguistic corpora and other databases, the use of online dictionaries, the construction of questionnaires, the analysis of audio-recorded data, the interpretation of experiments, etc.

- Bei der Wahl Ihres Themas im schriftlichen Staatsexamen in Sprachwissenschaft haben Sie im Studiengang Lehramt an Gymnasien unter anderem die Möglichkeit, eine mittelenglische oder altenglische Textklausur zu bearbeiten. Wenn Sie sich für die Sprachgeschichte interessieren, sind Sie in diesem Vorbereitungskurs genau richtig. Hierfür ist es vollkommen ausreichend, die Übung "Englische Sprachgeschichte" besucht zu haben. Weitere Vorkenntnisse sind zunächst nicht nötig. Der Schwerpunkt wird in diesem Semester erneut auf der mittelenglischen Textklausur liegen.
Mindestens zwei Semester vor Ihrem Examen, aber gern auch schon zur Orientierung früher, sollten Sie an diesem Examensvorbereitungskurs teilnehmen, um Ihre Kenntnis der englischen Sprachgeschichte und des Mittelenglischen aufzubauen und zu vertiefen.
Nach dem Besuch der Übung "Englische Sprachgeschichte" können Sie überlegen, ob Sie zunächst an dem "Aufbaukurs Englische Sprachgeschichte" teilnehmen möchten. Er knüpft inhaltlich direkt an die einführende Übung an und führt auf die Examensübung hin. Allerdings ist es möglich und ggf. sogar ratsam, den Aufbaukurs und die Examensübung gleichzeitig zu besuchen.
In der Examensübung werden zum einen über die Übung Englische Sprachgeschichte und den Aufbaukurs hinausgehende theoretische Fragestellungen überblicksartig geklärt, hauptsächlich geht es aber um die praktische Bearbeitung von mittelenglischen Staatsexamensklausuren der letzten Jahre. Den mittelenglischen Klausuren liegt immer ein klar definiertes Textkorpus aus den Werken Geoffrey Chaucers zugrunde. Diese sind Geschichten aus den Canterbury Tales und die ersten beiden Bücher von Troilus and Criseyde. Hieraus ist in der Examensklausur zunächst eine Passage zu übersetzen. Daher wird zusätzlich ein Intensivblockkurs Übersetzung Mittelenglisch-Deutsch angeboten.
Studierende anderer Studiengänge mit vertieftem Interesse an der englischen Sprachgeschichte sind in diesem Kurs ebenfalls willkommen. Kursunterlagen werden auf dem "Virtuellen Campus" bereitgestellt. Das Passwort wird zu Vorlesungsbeginn bekanntgegeben.

Es wird dringend empfohlen, mit der Vorbereitung auf die Klausur in englischer Sprachwissenschaft mindestens 1 Jahr vor Prüfungstermin zu beginnen.
- Inhalt:
- Die Lehrveranstaltung dient der intensiven Vorbereitung auf die wissenschaftliche Klausur nach LPO I §64 (3) 1b "Aufgabe aus der Sprachwissenschaft - Linguistik synchron" für das Lehramt an Gymnasien. Auf der Basis des vorgegebenen und für ganz Bayern einheitlichen Lektürekanons sollen die sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse der Studierenden in Hinblick auf die Anforderungen der Klausur erweitert und systematisiert werden. Der Schwerpunkt der Übung wird darin bestehen, zu früheren Terminen gestellte Aufgaben eingehend zu besprechen. Von den SeminarteilnehmerInnen wird erwartet, dass sie bereit sind, einzelne Klausuren detailliert vorzubereiten.

Zielgruppe sind Studierende des Lehramts an Grund- und Mittelschulen, Realschulen und beruflichen Schulen - vgl. hierzu alte LPO (2002): LPO I, §48 (4) 1.c) und neue LPO (2008): LPO I, §44 (3) 1.a). Auf der Basis des verbindlich festgelegten und für ganz Bayern einheitlichen Lektürekanons sollen die im Laufe des Studiums erworbenen sprachwissenschaftlichen Kenntnisse wiederholt und speziell auf die Anforderungen der Prüfung hin vertieft und systematisiert werden. Besprochen werden weiterhin die Modalität der Fragestellungen bei dieser Prüfung und die zu früheren Terminen gestellten Aufgaben. Gegen Ende des Semesters werden Übungsklausuren zur Überprüfung des erreichten Kenntnisstands durchgeführt.

- Kenntnis der in der Orientierungshilfe für StaatsexamenskandidatInnen (Englische Sprachwissenschaft) aufgeführten Literaturliste. Diese ist im Sekretariat des Lehrstuhls für Englische Sprachwissenschaft (U9/01.02) zu erhalten.

- Der Workshop richtet sich an Lehramtsstudierende des vertieften Studiengangs (LA Gym), die nach diesem Semester ihr Staatsexamen in Englisch ablegen wollen. Neben Strategien zur Vorbereitung und Durchführung der Übersetzungsklausur im Staatsexamen wird der Workshop Gelegenheit zur vertieften Beschäftigung mit syntaktischen Fehlerschwerpunkten bieten. Anhand von praktischen Beispielen aus vergangenen Prüfungen soll erarbeitet werden, was eine gelungene Übersetzung ausmacht. Die Teilnehmenden können individuelle Beratungen zur Prüfungsvorbereitung auf der Grundlage einer Probeklausur in Anspruch nehmen.
