Inhalt:

Researchers writing on late Ottoman history frequently are confronted with a predicament. On the one hand they are expected to theorize their approaches and strategic terminology used in their research according to the state of art in the humanities. On the other hand they are frequently confronted with a lack of seemingly simple empirical factual data (e.g. on people, places, dates and events) which, among historians, would be regarded as their duty to provide. As both types of tasks not only require considerable investment in terms of time and energy but also point to different directions rarely involving synergistic effects there can be no general solution or “best practice” for solving them. All that can be done is to decide and discuss on a case-to-case basis which workaround would seem most appropriate in a given situation.

Ziel der Übung ist die Verbesserung der Lesefähigkeit. Gelesen und rezitiert werden Texte aus verschiedenen Zeiten und Genres. Voraussetzung sind sichere grammatische Grundkenntnisse des Arabischen, mindestens Arabisch III. Erwartet wird regelmäßige Vorbereitung und Teilnahme. Inhalt:

The colloquium is primarily aimed at graduate students (MA and PhD candidates) who are working on a thesis, or are developing their research questions. Students will be expected to present their work, and engage with the other participants and the lecturer in discussions of key concepts in method and theory. Please contact the lecturer via email if you wish to attend, and give an indication of your research interests.
The colloquium is also open to interested linguists of all backgrounds who wish to participate in general exchange of ideas, and we may, depending on the programme, also be able to incorporate additional presentations; please check with the lecturer beforehand.
