  • The first session takes place on November 13, 2020.
Inhalt:
For a long period, social sciences were characterized by the application of nonexperimental methods such as social surveys, interviewing, or direct observation. In recent decades however, experimental research has become more and more popular. Moreover, some social science questions may even be best addressed with the use of experiments, particularly those that concern causality.
This seminar picks up on these developments and introduces into the basics of experimental research. In the first part of the class, we will talk about different experimental types (laboratory, field, and vignette) and the research questions they are best suited for. In the second part of the class, we will then discuss exemplary studies for the different experimental types. We will particularly focus on experimental designs that are commonly used in migration-, and integration research. Building on these principles, we will close the class by designing own experiments.

  • The first session takes place on November 12, 2020.
Inhalt:
An important dimension of integration is the social level, i.e. contacts, friendships, or romantic relationships. For migrants and their descendants, contacts with members of the host society are particularly beneficial. On the one hand, these so-called interethnic contacts or friendships represent the socio-cultural dimension of integration. On the other hand, they also promote the development of other important resources related to the host country, such as language skills or opportunities to participate in the labor market. For the population of the host society, interethnic contacts can be interpreted as a sign of acceptance of ethnic groups, which in turn can help to reduce prejudice. Despite the immense relevance of interethnic contacts and friendships, the associated research has long focused primarily on their consequences. The seminar will first discuss different theories on the development of interethnic contacts and friendships. Subsequently, we will take a closer look at empirical findings on this topic using relevant papers.
